Are swear words allowed on here? Probably not.... I ALWAYS buy from Amazon, (I read a lot) but I wanted Redbook in hand for a road trip this week -- I'll remember in the future to utilize that "Help Coin Talk while you shop at Amazon" . I will not look at the others you listed. I will not look at the others you listed. I will not.... Resolution for 2011 I'm off for my "real" cat in a day or 2!!! NO thanks for the links! (Just kidding)
I am TRULY amazed at how many books there are (just in a Borders..) about coins, currency, foreign, ancient, and on and on.... I shudder when I realize how much IN LIFE that I don't know about. Just like any hobby, I'm sure that there are a lot of books that one shouldn't waste time on, but that's the trouble with unfamiliarity; you don't know what you don't know.. I did see some books that would be nice to own, and wow did they cost a lot..
I can honestly say that if you are truly interested in numismatics and the beauty or history of coins/notes, and have invested your time and self in the knowledge of them that any doors they open to you will be all the more rewarding if and when you ever buy or sell any actual pieces of coins, notes or anything therein. Not only will you know what you are doing you will be able to speak authoritatively, make sound decisions, protect yourself from mistakes and inspire others in the process. There is a saying, "buy the book before the coin" and you are on the right track.
Beautiful pick-up(3) USS656 the shield is un-believable amount of intaglio work well worth the price considering how many engraverers it took to make this magnificent die ! My favorite . congrats.
I just stumbled on to this thread and will come and view it all someday. - Wonderfull engravings! Here is a "Hand Pulled" on Spider Press BEP made at FUN 2008. It is #79 out of 100. I had to win a raffle for the opportunity to purchase it. It was fun.
Spider Press Souvenier cards. :thumb: Beautiful ! Like the State Shield "Hand Pulled Spider press " embossed & fine detail cannot be matched.
Awesome piece Rick! Glad you found us and happy collecting. Let us know if you obtain others or feel free to post any of your favorites. :smile
Darryl, this is another favorite of mine -- the design and engraving is impeccable. Many of the union cards are brilliant, since the plate printers were out to impress their peers. Lucyray, I concur with krispy on some of his reasons for collecting souvenir cards, such as affordability. But there is a certain romance to fine engraving, and I appreciate the skill it takes to create depth and beauty from a collection of tiny lines. I also like the idea of owning a piece of art that may have been printed in 2010 from a plate that was created 150 years ago, yet it looks just as it did then. Kind of like shaking hands with the artist across time.
Thanks, it sold for under $10 which is sad in a way. I agree that the art work looks very nice and the engraving looks to be a really nice size. The seller also sold some eagles which each sold for about 80. The Eagles look to be about 3"x3" and are not as complex. I know they demand a premium probably due to number produced. If you compare 1 piece of art to the other (price aside), the one I purchased is much more appealing to me.
I sold a few souvenir cards to Ken Barr way back in 1982 or 1983 and he paid me very fair prices. He's an honest guy who knows what's common and what's rare.
He has excellent inventory. Best place to see images of what he is selling is his eBay store when he has items listed. I've purchased a few things from him and was very pleased.
I have also happily bought from him and I would bet his site drives pricing on ebay in general. Those eagles I mentioned are listed at $325 and $300. I would bet that helped drive the ebay sale to $80. Still a fraction of what he has them listed at, but I do wonder the effect his list has on the results? It is a great reference so I am very happy to have access to it! I wish all of the pieces had number printed information. That might affect some of those prices realized at auction. The Men in Currency is one of the few pieces that actually mention number printed.
Here are close-ups of the three sheets. The IPPDSEUNA is bigger than I realized and is reallllly nice. I am very glad I picked it up! Hope you enjoy!
Man! Those must looks amazing in person. Thanks for sharing the detail scan of the last vignette too. So much detailed work in all of those in such a small amount of space. Congrats on those pick-ups.
All beautiful pieces! I'm still amazed at how affordable these incredible works of art are. I'm aware of some of the Canadian and European ones that can run into the high hundreds and thousands of dollars but a lot of the U.S. ones are comparable in beauty and design for only a few dollars.
I hope the US ones stay that way for some time so I can work on obtaining more. There are current vignettes offered from the Canadian Banknote Co. that I like very much, but they are all pretty steep at $70 ea.
I'm with you! When gsalexan said the last was also one of his favorites I knew I was in for a treat. It's really impressive in hand. I hope they stay as affordable as they are now! I paid about 50 for the Men in Currency but I knew it was very limited and I did not want to lose the opportunity. Thanks! Best Regards ~ Darryl
Thanks Darryl! Just for you, here's another Union card you may not have seen yet. Fairly recent (2003) and not too expensive -- you might be able to pick one up in the $25 range. -- Greg
