It's certainly possible, but no more so than what I suggested. Having somebody look at them in hand is the only way to know.

Lucy they shouldn't charge you anything to tell you if the coins are Proofs or not. Now if you want them to give you an estimate of value, that they might charge for.

Either way, don't take the coins out of those bags.

What if they go to take them out, do I stop them? I won't be asking value, but what, just are they proofs? Anything else to ask, do you think? Thanks a million for your help..I stopped in once before, about a year ago, but only had a list and he wouldn't look at it. Maybe he was just too busy I supposed at the time, but after reading this site for these many months...well I guess I understand... Lucy

Lucy anybody who knows anything about coins can look at those in the bags and tell if they are Proofs or not. I could do it about 3 seconds or less. That's how hard it is.

Now, it depends on what you want to do with the coins as to whether or not you let someone take them out of the bags. I have no idea what you'd like to do with them. But the bags at least offer protection from fingerprints and minor hairlines. I am only suggesting that you take care to leave them in the bags because of this. Because if they are Proofs, and it's possible they are even though I think it is a very slim possibility, a fingerprint or hairlines would greatly affect the value.

Also, a great deal depends on your dealer. I've seen some dealers who would take coins in those bags like that, rip the bags apart and just dump the coins out on the counter. Now that is just beyond stupid ! But it's what some of them do. And I'd hate to see it happen to you so I suggested the safer route.

The more you tell me about what your wishes are then the more I can offer suggestions on how to go about it.

Just ask him politely not to remove the coins from the bags before you hand them over to him. If he says that he won't be able to tell if they are proofs without removing them, then just thank him for his time and look for someone else to help you.

Lucy you mentioned that you found them in a trinket box. Was the box light blue/grayish in color about 2 inches by 2 inches wide with a top and bottom that slid together?

you dont have to take the first opinion as fact either. if they tell you they are not proofs and offer you $50 or $100 to take them off your hands... and especially if they offer more when you say you dont want to sell, then they are worth something. i asked a jeweler about the value of a watch once, and he offered me $100 i said no, he said $200 i said no, he said $300. then when he knew i was not looking to sell, he told me it was worth around $1500 (repaired), and to hang on to it, and possibly insure it. just something to look out for, but it doesnt mean everyone is dishonest.

Just a follow-up comment, if anyone wondered what ever happened.. I finally made the trip in to the 'big city' of Traverse, to the only coin shop I know of. They were absolutely awesome there..the first 'young man' took a look and gave me some song and dance, and I threw a few questions at him (some things I picked up on this site!) and he ended up getting the owner to come and speak with me. The owner took one look and said, yes, definitely proof coins. He recommended I leave them as is, in the bags, until I decide what I want to do with them. And he took the time to show me around and educate me on a few things (trivia wise, etc..), let me look at everything they had (lots and lots of it), told me to come and see him with any questions at all, gave me a copy of the latest Coin World magazine that had just come in (wouldn't take my money for it!), and told me of a book he has on order that he felt would be perfect for what I need next to know. Gee, it was fun! They had most everything I've seen here, including even engravings and die plates, and sheets....
Thank you everyone who advised me here!
    Lucy
p.s. A nice piece of advice the owner told me, don't have a coin magazine delivered to my home; it alerts people.. Good thinking!!
