Noobie jumping right in here. Maybe you folks can kindly give me an idea of any worth, past sentimental, on a few of these. As I mentioned in my intro .. I inherited, among many other coins, the "family" silver dollars; all of which had been passed down from great-grandparents. Some my Mom wore {as you can see in these pix} in necklace holders which were popular back in the 70s. I've never removed them from the settings, so I presume the edges would still be quite nice. Anyhow .. here is one of them - an 1884 U.S. Silver Dollar. All comments & critique will certainly help me learn. If it has a mint marking, its either worn off or I'm not seeing it beneath the eagle. Thanks for looking!
Kelli - the coin is worth its silver content only. For a couple of reasons - 1 it's very worn, and 2 it's considered damaged because it is a jewelry piece. Either reason by itself would have the same result. As for your Peace dollar in the other thread, again silver value due to condition.
Thanks a million for your input! I presumed most, if not all, would only be worth their sentimental value to me at best. I did not know that about jewelry equating to damage. Luckily only 2 of them were worn on a necklace. This one & an 1882. Its rather exciting "wondering" if any of them are worth anything. I'm sure everyone here has had the odd relative see their coins & start hyperventilating over how much they could possibly be worth. LoL It's still a lot of fun learning.
Well understand Kelli that even silver value is nothing to sneeze at these days. Each silver dollar holds approx $22 worth of silver at current spot prices. But I know what you mean about getting excited and it being a lot of fun. Fun after all is the best of all reasons for someone to take up coin collecting
Oh yes .. I do realize they are worth the silver - probably not a bad idea to hang onto them It would be difficult to part with them over just the price of the silver. Now if silver gets to the level of gold ... hmmm. LoL
