Hello please forgive me for asking but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I was talking to a local store owner about buying some Eisenhower dollars but the conversation changed when he said he also had these for sale. I'm not familiar with these coins but I told him they looked faked. I did not purchase this coin but I did tell him I would try and find out if it was real. Your thoughts are welcomed. This coin weights 19.1 grams and is has a very grainy finish. Thanks
Thanks I;m not familiar at all with this coin. I checked feebay and the redbook but nothing there. I 've seen fake Morgans before and this coin reminds me of them.
here is the closest thing to what yours looks like except the reverse is totally different: on HA.com http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1151&Lot_No=6627 here is another: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1151&Lot_No=5366 http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1151&Lot_No=5367 http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1151&Lot_No=5369 close to yours but still not quite there: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1151&Lot_No=5370
Thanks Shoewrecky I checked your thread and I think I'm dealing with a fake coin. The date doesn't look right among other things.
The obverse appeared on a pattern or two. I'm not sure about the reverse. I do know this pattern (patterns?) is/are heavily counterfeited by the Chinese.
Thanks Hobo this person has a few of these coins and some Morgans as well. I don't really know him other than buying my lunch there quit often so I have no idea how he got them. I will try and talk to him again tomorrow.
The coin is almost certainly a fake. I am not an expert on Pattern pieces by any stretch of the imagination but I have not been able to locate this particular piece. It appears to be a fantasy piece. I have not been able to find any Trade Dollar Patterns with that date - 1871. In fact, I have not been able to find that obverse at all. The design is similar to other 'Liberty Seated On Globe' designs but that one looks rather amateurish. This particular reverse was used on an 1873 Beaded Coronet Trade Dollar Pattern but I have not been able to find it used with the obverse of the coin depicted in your post. Again, I think it is extremely likely that piece is a fake, most likely a Chinese counterfeit.
I checked the Judd pattern guide and this isn't a variety. Glad you didn't buy it, because it is fake.
Oh that adds a bit of caution to the offer . Did he tell you he knew them to be pattern's ? Something's wrong with this offer .
Thanks coinmaster now I have to tell another person the bad news,I hope he didn't pay out the wazoo for it.
^.^ This. This also applies to British Trade dollars, probably more faked than even ours. The only coin I would be more leery of uncertified would be Chinese silver dollars, especially the one with the Model A.
Maybe he bought it in a flea market like ebay and he thought it was a great deal and maybe wants to sell it to you or someone else at a higher price. You did good though by asking others and asking for opinions. This is the way you learn. Ask, research, read a bunch and then you can teach others. Be very careful with the Morgan Dollars as well. Many counterfeits out there and copies with no "COPY" lettering on them.
It is a Chinese fake. It copies the Judd 1220 Trade dollar pattern of 1872 but with an 1871 date. (It is not quite the same obv design as the one used on the 1871 obv. On the 1871 obv the spears point AT stars 8 and 9. On the 1872 obv they point to the left of the stars.) The rev is the 1872 design. In 1871 the rev used the word COMMERCIAL rather than TRADE. (The COMMERCIAL rev was also used in 1872.)
