I'd go MS-61 the luster is there, but it appears that someone went to town on it with a sharp object and scratched the heck out of the reverse... Other than that i think your looking at an MS-65+ grade... Clean looking coin minus the scratches!

I think they mean on Monticello. Just a guess though.

I'll say MS64+. I think the weakness and those 2 big hits on the steps will keep it from a 65.

I'm thinking the hair is more of a weakness of strike issue. I'm saying MS 65. Its hard for me to see any luster breaks in the picture though. On my computer looks almost like a drawing.

I say MS-66. The center of Monticello is weak, but all of the rest of the detail is there. There seem to be no planchet flaws, and the surfaces are clean and unworn. The die polish lines are really cool and shows that the die state is late for this coin. A large number of the 1939-S (reverse of 1938) are generally well-struck and full step coins exist. The weakness of Monticello on this particular coin may limit the grade to MS-65, but I think that the obverse strike pulls the grade up to MS-66.

The reverse looks more like flow lines to me.

The coin, particularly the obverse, looks clean enough for up to a 67.

The luster, however, is a bit of a head scratcher. Looks muted in the photos and may even be light circulation wear.

I guessed 65, but with VERY low confidence.

    How is luster in-hand?

After further review, I'd like to change my grade to AU 63. :)

Seems to me I've seen that coin before. Hopefully I have expressed the same opionion that I did then.
