Last night, they were offering for sale a set of all 5 5-oz Nat Park coins. ANACS MS-69. Nice "Oak Presentation Box."

    The price?

    $4799.

    Dollars.

    I almost crapped.

Here is a neat story related to the National Park bullion: Here.

So, if everyone would write to the Director of the Mint, cancel all of their subscriptions and/or refuse to ever purchase anything from the Mint in the future, do you think they might stop pulling stunts like this which is a rip-off to the collecting community.

I still think the Mint should do the "counties of the USA" coins.

...but seriously, I think someone should be acting as a advocate for consumers here.

Absolutely, that would be a great idea! I mentioned this about another issue but I'll say it again about this ATB 5oz krap. If you happen to live in a small town and you happen to know the news person there and you could present this idea of unhappy patriotic Americans being angry about a segment of the Gov't that is creating a hussle then maybe they would cover the story as a coin community getting the shaft story. IDK, I'm just sayin'

No, because we wouldn't be serious. Collectors and other similar groups do this from time to time but are never taken seriously because the mint knows that they wouldn't stop buying. Some would, but others would still buy just because they would think that with the other collectors on the sidelines they are buying coins that will be rare.

Only true disinterest of collectors, something you cannot petition, will change mint practices. To be fair, its not really the mints fault, but Congress. Talk to your Congressman's office to get better legislation concerning issues like this. Congress authorized this program as a bullion program, meaning the mint HAS to go through their bullion dealers and not direct to the public like they do for collector coins.

I wish it would work like you suggest Chris, I am just doubtful. I am doing my part, I have not bought a US mint product in 30 years. :)

I predict that the hockey pucks will eventually fetch bullion plus 20%. I like the coins but will wait a couple of years and buy them cheap on ebay.

In your dreams maybe. It is no hockey puck but a simple $2 bill.

Info previously posted in another thread on 12/31/2010:

The MS69 5-coin sets graded by ANACS for $4799.95.

At the time of airing on 12/30, they had 210 sets available.

Mike Mezack himself then stated IF they received any sets back from grading in MS70 that they WOULD have them available in 5 coin sets for $25k and that a year from now those could be valued at $50k. I kid you not!

The massive ANACS holders have a 5-slab red wood and brass hinged presentation/storage box with a little skeleton key lock to keep them safe inside.

I'm guessing that the red oak box itself is worth at least $4,000. What a steal:)

They seemed to have less red oak boxes for the 5 oz. slabs in stock than ANACS graded 5-coin sets. Theoretically, it should be worth more. ;)

I wonder if you can just order the red oak presentation boxes?......... They are stunning! They were selling those dang morgans on there for double what they are worth................

They do sell some red oak cases by themselves... but I wouldn't want to give them any of my business. Wood they are not, at best it's laminate pressed board and full of glues and unknown chemical dyes, all of which are also not good materials to stow coins, including slabbed coins in/near.

I wouldn't buy nothing from them guys but curiosity gets the best of me so I check in to see what they are selling when I see them on.

No offense, but the whole ATB 5 oz craze has turned into an absolute circus. Those who want to purchase it for a *sane* price, I totally respect. But this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/2010-5-oz-America-Beautiful-5-Coin-Set-/260716725663

I understand the rarity factor and exclusivity, but the rarity is so artificial. To me at the end of the day, that is just 25 oz of silver. And I wouldn't pay more than $775. For all 5 together.
