These ads have been out for quite some time. From what I remember, the seller had dies made from original sketches of a proposed design that didn't make it.

The biggest problem with these ads IMHO is that people think that the US Government is minting these

Well i know on the buffalo coin is says "COPY" in his hair if you notice that side is not shown
But once or twice in the whole commercial and for the untrained eye it,s hard to notice
But on the union proof i couldnt find the word copy any ware and that,s real scary!!
Maybe i missed it! but maybe i didnt! ;(

I keep seeing the $50 Gold Buffalo Replica, made of clad and plated with 14 milligrams of gold, commercial a lot, even on children's channels!

It would not be consider a copy and perhaps don't required the copy marking, similar to the 1964 peace dollar, a fantasy coin.

I agree. The US never minted the 1877 $50 Union so the modern incarnation would not be a copy. There was nothing to copy and it should not be confused with a genuine 1877 $50 Union (because none exist). Anyone buying these fantasy pieces thinking they are genuine need to educate themselves.

The US Mint never struck any $50 gold coins until the 1915 Round and Octagonal Pan Pacs.

    How much is a milligram?

one thousandth (1/1,000) gram, so if the ads say contains 14 mg of 24K gold, by my calculations, with gold @ $1400 per oz. that’s about 65¢ worth of gold.

Unfortunately, though, the 64-D Peace Dollar is NOT a fantasy coin (contrary to what many may think). It was indeed minted by the US government but was allegedly never released. Some stories exist to the contrary and many claim that some escaped the melting pot. But they were minted for circulation unlike the $50 Union which was only designed with the intention of being minted, but never was.

Yes, I understand the debate going on about this 1964 Peace dollar and what you are indicating. I used the term fantasy simply because the maker of these "?" indicate on his web site that they are fantasy coins. http://www.dc-coin.com/search.aspx?find=1964+peace

Except that unlike the 1964-D peace dollar, genuine 1877 Half Unions do still exist. So under the HPA they DO have to be marked COPY. And the "things" are so marked. COPY is found on the top of the shield on the eagles breast. (Personally I think the 1964-D copies need to be marked as well under the provisions of the HPA.)

Can't disagree with you on the 1964 Peace dollar. I also believe they should be marked copy, unfortunately it appears HPA is not being enforced very well by the feds.

This may be quasi-political but anyone who tries to profit from the attacks of September 11th should be publicly flogged and humiliated. Then possibly shot. I haven't made up my mind. :)

I wonder how many of those are going to end up re-sold without their background known.

Since they are strikes over genuine dollars with the potential of possibly deceiving their buyers, wouldn't the laws against coin mutilation come into play?
