Hello there all. This is a fairly common date SLQ, just curious what people thought of its grade (its NGC). I'm not going to post a poll, but I'll post its grade in a couple days after I've seen some responses from people. I'm almost certain my pictures are crappy, if there are any particular regions you need closer shots of to better grade this coin just ask.
VF-20 It's a shame this coin circulated. It's impossible to say for certain but it may have been a Full Head before it entered circulation.
I don't see much wear or any dings. I would give a grade of EF-40, if it has some luster. The drawbacks are the roughnesss of the stamping and wear at bottom of the shield and across the banner at mid section. The close up image probably dosen't do it justice. All in All I think this is a very nice 1928-S Coin.
I think the leg is definitely wear, I would go VF35-XF40 depending on luster in hand. I think this coin is a great example of coins I like, very pretty worn coins that served thier purpose as coins but are still attractive. I will take these over a lot of MS pieces, but that is just me.
This coin is certainly unique! I am of the same opinion as you, medoraman. With grades going from vf-20 to ms-62, I must say I was right in believing this coin to be pretty difficult to grade. Guesses have been close, but none are right on the money yet.
a closeup of the MM area please ! This may be the small S variety I'm straining my eyes trying to look at it.
This coin is atypical (at least to me) because it has pretty stark contrasts wear-wise; while from a distance it looks perhaps AU/MS due to luster and radiance, a closer perspective shows the true surfaces, which are fairly worn in several areas (although virtually untouched in other areas, it seems). Does this affect the value? I've heard of the small/large distinction, but haven't seen any information on how it changes value.
I was not familiar with this when I bought it several years ago... I actually sent it in for attribution and never asked for them to check for small/large "s". Is that a something NGC recognizes? Also, I know these pictures aren't much help, but does it look like there might be a RPM in the south east corner of the S? Or is that just machine doubling that makes this coin less desirable, lol. I think it may be the small variety, but could use some pointers. Disregard aberrant fields distorted by my horrible light source; you can make out the LED's in it haha.
