Tell me about it. The price I paid is sticking in my craw...... But congrats to you, TC, for being patient and frugal. Perhaps in a few years it could be sticking in your craw? Never know. Luck of the draw. Right place, right time. One never knows....
Thanks Ken. I agree with you about luck here. The real winners of this set were those that purchased it directly from the Mint in 1999. I did not get back into collecting until 2007 so missed out on it. Nobody knows what the future holds for these sets. I took a chance that they would not drop too much more. You never know...they may continue to decrease or perhaps increase again. As you well know, these were widely distributed back in 1999 such that dealers did not get the quantity they desired. Soon after, interest in the State Quarter program increased and these sets skyrocketed in price. I am thinking that due to the current state of the economy (and the completion of the State Quarters program), some folks now need to sell theirs off for the cash or have simply lost interest in them when the program ended (perhaps received them as gifts or bought them as a novelty back in 1999). Interestingly, I have been tracking these sets for a while and can tell you that they do sell rather quickly when auctioned or even slightly discounted. This tells me that there are many collectors out there who may have missed out initially but still want the set. In other words, I think demand is still strong for this set. Happy New Year to you and yours! TC
I got back into collecting a little earlier than you did, TC. 2000. I even had a chance to pick these up on the mint website if, memory serves, but I didn't act quick enough and the door was shut on the offering. I also remember having the opportunity to get the '99 uncirculated set but that was discontinued before I had the chance to act. I even had a chance to pick up the clad proofs at Sam's Club. They were in a display near the checkout and I thought to myself, "I'll get 'em next week". Next week came and they were gone. Snooze and loose. And if you ain't patient (like I wasn't) you pay the price. Happy New Year to you and your Family as well TC. Hey, just noticed. One whole year on the boards (coming up) for you......
They are $159.99 at Mintproducts.com this weekend. I have ordered from them before and have only received high quality products. :smile TC
Be sure to validate the set when you buy one! A lot of people were replacing the silver with clad coins and reselling the sets.
so funny that I bought a 2000 silver proof set from the USMint when it was issued ... it's the only silver proof set I bought in the past 20 years (other than the 2010 set which i just bought) if i had bought a silver proof set 1 year before (1999) or 1 year later (2001) I would have made a killing. talk about bad timing! i guess this means the 2009 and 2011 sets will skyrocket ... and my 2010 set will languish ; )
And then sold them in 2000 or so. Back then they were up to the $300 a set range. Considering they really aren't any rarer than the other years I see them as having nowhere to go but down for awhile.
I agree that they are not rare at all but think the price will plateau very soon. I sort of see a redistribution going on such that these sets are now getting into the hands of people who really want them for the long haul. Those who purchased at a premium are likely not going to sell at a great loss. There are still plenty of buyers out there. Most sellers now are probably in need of the money, never really wanted them or are no longer interested due to end of series. TC
I think the floor may have been reached. These look to have stabilized or maybe even have started to trend slightly upward on ebay. TC
My 1999 silver proof set just arrived in the mail today. I told myself that I would send it back if not fully satisfied. The OGP is in perfect shape and looks like it was never even opened. Most importantly, the coins all look fantastic. No haze, no white spots at all. I cannot find any blemishes even under magnification. I am very pleased to finally add this set to my collection. Kudos to Mintproducts.com for delivering an excellent product yet again. BTW: I did the tissue test and the quarters are indeed silver...no tampering of this set. TC
