Thank you, The three pieces look really nice together and I hope to add the other 4 as I can. I am still trying to lean more about the company that printed these and who the engraver might have been. The 25 cent fractional has a small w on the Obv in the lower left corner. I am hoping this will help me identify the engraver.
Beautiful pick ups the 5 cent Dog guarding the safe I'm sure I've seen on ABNCo obsoletes .Maybe that will help but without the ABNCO markings it is difficult to say (as your finding out) to ID the engraver.I would try to contact Gene Hessler .
Well, now I know for sure what company printed the fractionals. I found all of these images on the internet and they do not belong to me. (sadly )
Thanks Bob, I did some hunting this morning and could not find any additional information about the dog and safe but now I know who the printer is. Hatch Lithographic Company, NY. From this maybe Gene or some other source could help identify the engraver? Thanks ~ Darryl
Thank you, I wish I had a book on obsolete currency, might be helpful to identify where and when these images were used. It might also give me insight to who the engraver was.
Gene Hessler's book U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes has some citations of engravings by George W. Hatch* [engraving of Mercury - Act of March 2, 1861 $50 Compound Interest Note] and an ABNCo. engraving of 'America Seizing the Lightning' by G.W. Hatch on the face of a $100 Legal Tender Treasury Note. However, there were no examples of the vignettes on these notes in this book. *In Hessler's, The Engravers Line, George Whitfield Hatch (1804-1866) was President of ABNCo. (1863-66), amongst other companies-- some bearing his own name in partnership with others. There are a few other Hatch names, such as the well known bank note engraver Lorenzo Hatch, but I don't see anything amongst the Hatch citations that would indicated any worked on the female portrait or other vignettes seen on these fractional notes. I could be wrong, and don't have a more concise Obsolete reference book at my disposal, but these are just some things I looked through and eliminated(?) as possibilities. Maybe the Robert Kravitz collectors guide on Fractional Currency would be worth looking into. Scroll down to bottom of page of link.
Thanks Chris, I went through my copy of Engraves Line and the images by Lorenzo on pg 163 are similar but not the same as mine. I noticed a few different similarities including how the stars are used on the bottom/left image. Without a reference book that covers these wild cat notes I may not be able to identify the engraver.
I noticed that in several of the Stacks auction archives for obsolete notes, they mention many of these fractional notes similar to yours were from the 'Herb & Martha Schingoethe Obsolete Currency Collection'. There were several auction catalogs assembled of the Schingoethe's comprehensive collections when they went to auction in 2008. Perhaps Stacks themselves may have some better detailed information regarding engraver/designers or perhaps some of the Spink auction catalogs from the original auctions contain better info, if you can track some copies down (or if PDF versions exist).
Those are real neat. I'll keep an eye out for any more for you. You never know when one will come up.
I never get a chance to find the books on obsolete notes. Any idea on their price and if they are still being published?
Thank you Duke! You can find the Obsolete books (just search ebay) but they can get pricey especially if you focus on the different states. I have seen somewhere in my search a book about wild cat currency and that is what would probably be best for these pieces. Here is an example: Item number:230558541378
I found a similar image as the 10 cent note you posted. I found the image in the specialized catalog. The note is from El Banco de Cartagena in Columbia listed as PS 338 the images name is liberty. Lou
Thanks Lou! What is interesting is that they are very-very similar but not the same. They may indeed have both been done by the same engraver.
~ Getting over my eBay losses quickly!!! Everything happens for a reason! Found the two and now it's on the way to me. Will post pictures when it arrives. Best Regards ~ Darryl
