The pre-1800 Krause catalog seems like a good place to start. Anything before 1800 is usually beyond my grasp though. Anyone else have a suggestion? Are there any good guidebooks to world gold or trade coinage of the period?

Somehow I missed this post -

Anyway, start here - http://www.cointalk.com/t14112/ - for web sites. As for books, there are literally a ton of books on the subject ! One of the best is Cobbs, Pieces of Eight and Treasure Coins by Sewall Menzel. It covers the Spanish colonial mints from 1536 thru 1773 for both gold and silver coinage. But you'll find next to nothing about the coins of Spain herself.

Most of the other books are going to be more specialized dealing primarily with certain types from specific and limited time periods. And most are written in Spanish.

Thanks for the link to the other post and the books suggestions. I was worried some of the books would be in Spanish but looks like theres some good stuff out there on the internet. I appreciate your guy's help and I will try to post a picture soon.

    I saw this book also

It looked a little more encompassing as some of the coins in question were minted in Lima and other places.
