Is this an error or PMD?

  1. I am doing some roll searching today with my son and we came across this Lincoln cent. Is this an error or simply post mint damage? Thanks, TC

Nope! No error. That was the first coin the US Mint struck in 199 AD.

Just kidding! It looks like it is probably the result of a grease-filled die. Grease-filled dies are pretty common on Lincoln cents. I doubt there would be much of a premium (if any), but it is a nice conversation piece.

I'm not sure... if that photo accurately renders what the coin actually looks like, it could be worth a couple bucks or potentially more. Usually with a grease-filled die isn't the area all splotchy? Either way that is a really neat coin

Not necessarily! Grease and debris can accumulate and be compacted into the recesses so that it is practically flush with the field, and if the dirt/debris is relatively fine in granularity, the field can appear normal.
