This is my first post here and just want to say it has really helped me alot in gathering some info on ancient roman coins. About 2wks ago my wife was cleaning under the couch cushions and was shocked (as I) to find an old coin still in the coin shop display card. The coin card looks to be packaged in the early 80's and still has the coin shop info on the card. We have no clue where or how this coin ended up on our couch. It was right on top just under the cushions with the assorted pennies and popcorn kernels from our 3yr old grandson. My wife cleans every 2wks so it was put there just recently. Anyway, here is a picture of the Marcus Aurelius coin....and please forgive my lack of photography skills with closeups, I'd appreciate it.:D

It seems to be in decent condition for a 1700yr old coin. Any info is appreciated but I'd really like to know what this coin might be worth. Thanx in advance for your help!

Congratulations on discovering a wormhole in your couch that bends space and time. I have one in my laundry hamper, but so far it only deposits neolithic tools, which are really hard to authenticate without a properly documented provenance.

The obverse reads AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F (Aurelius Caesar Augustus Pii Filius). The reverse is COS II (Consul for the second time) and shows Honos holding a branch and cornucopia.

Your coin, in this condition, would likely retail in the $50 - $100 range. Marcus Aurelius is a popular emperor among collectors, being the last of a string of "good" emperors before his egomaniac paranoid lunatic son Commodus took over and officially launched the slow decline of the empire. It would be a nice find at a coin show for a reasonable price. Free from a couch is even better.

Thank you for the quick reply! What a mystery. We may never find who it belonged to or how it got there.....but it sure is a long way from Rome.

Hey thanx. It's been quite a conversation piece here in small town America. It's one of those mysteries that will never be solved on how that thing ended up in our couch.
