Special Coins of the Grand Duchy of Baden - 1906 In 1852 Wilhem Ludwig was appointed Prince Regent of the German State, Baden under the royal name of Friedrich I Von Baden. In 1856 Baden became a Grand Duchy and Freidrich I was elevated to the title of Grand Duke. Another event occurred in 1856; Friedrich married Prussian Princess Louisa of Saxe-Weimar, daughter of Wilhem I sealing an alliance with Prussia. 1906 was the 50th Anniversary (Golden) of Friederich I and Louisa. Two special silver coins were issued to commemorate the event: a 2 Mark piece measuring 28mm and weighing in at 0.3215 ounce Actual Silver Weight (350,000 for circulation - 200 Matte Proofs) and a 38mm 5 Mark weighing in at 0.8037 ounce ASW (50,000 for circulation - unknown amount of Proofs). The design is the same on both of the coins.
