Pilkenton: You've got a scammer on your hands! He's got PayPal on his side too now with a case. Your 'no refund' policy is useless and you will get screwed if he follows through with Negative Feedback. I've been there with this exact same type buyer/scam, and for an item under $10. It really blows. My advice to you today is as it always is when dealing with PayPal and/or eBay, get in touch with PayPal immediately... CALL THEM. Tell them you are concerned and have been trying to do the correct thing with this transaction. If the buyer refuses to return the item because he doesn't want to pay return shipping, and he fails to return the item in the amount of time PayPal gives him for his case, the case will be dropped-- but stick close to the date in which this can happen as you can call PayPal again after that time expires to have them drop/close the case against you. Note that any funds you have tied up in this item will remain on hold during this lengthy period of time. You may even be unable to use your account depending on their handling of the case. Regardless, the buyer is likely to use negative feedback in the end against you (which you cannot do in return to them and warn other sellers) and eBay will NOT remove negative feedback against you, even if you win the case, once it's there -- it's there. No matter how correct you are about this transaction you will likely get burned by feedback. The only thing you will be able to do if he posts such feedback is to reply to that feedback with your comment in hopes of warning others about the scam tactic. For the most part you're going to have a headache to deal with for some time. I'm sorry to hear about this happening to you. A lesson to be learned and to be on the look out for at all times.
How much of a partial refund does he want? I mean if he don't want a full refund what does he want half of a refund? That don't make sense. Last time this happen to me I just refunded their money and told them to keep the coin. The individual is on my block list now.
As for my return policy, I did not request it. It was there after I signed up. I don't mind refunding anybody. I wonder how much he wants back for a partial refund. If I offer him a few bucks, he's not going to be happy. He just doesn't want to have to go through the process of having to return it. I'm going to call paypal right now.
P olitely explain that you cannot change your policy and offer a partial refund of any kind, but you will gladly refund his purchase price upon receipt of the coin in it's original holder, and that upon review of the returned item you MAY issue a refund for postage. Then eat the loss, ban the guy and give him a negative feedback as a buyer. I mean who needs this crap ? He's playing you and I would call his bluff in a minute. Especially if it were only going to cost me a couple of bucks to do so. I don't like games or drama much and don't have a lot of tolerance for it. IMHO gary
This is exactly why EBay is frustrating. It seems he got a good deal on the coin. He gets it and doesn't like it. Straight away goes to threatening to leave bad feedback and demanding a partial refund. No note to the seller letting him know that he isn't happy...putting the ball in the sellers court to make it right. This guy went straight to the bad feedback. You never really got a chance to make it right. When it's said and done you still have no other option but to leave positive feedback... le sigh.
Sellers can block bidders from bidding on their auctions but that doesn't stop the same buyer from using another account to bid again. Also, Sellers cannot post negative feedback for buyers, that ability has long since been removed from Sellers ability to warn others, complain or retaliate about abusive Buyers. Only Buyers have the power to post negative feedback against a Seller, which is partly why this scam continues. A Seller may however, respond to a Buyer's negative feedback or ask the Buyer to mutually agree to remove the negative feedback, but good luck with that given the nature of the problem.
Here's what happened. Went back to ebay. He opened a case against me, saying I was uncooperative because I wouldn't issue a partial refund, even though he acknowledged my offer to issue a full refund when he returns the coin. Within ten minutes the case was closed. A full refund was given to him. He now has the coin and the money. He then gave me a negative feedback!!! I called ebay. They looked into it. They refunded the money and emailed the buyer to send the coin back (that'll never happen). They also said they would eat the refund so I won't be out any money. As for the red mark, ebay says they can't take it off, but hopefully my outstanding record and my professional reply to his feedback, will outweigh the bad mark.
Can't remove the negative feedback. Deplorable! Glad you at least got your money back promptly. Be sure to block the buyer from future bidding on your auctions.
that's jacked up on so many levels...ppl like that need to be strung up by their toes with barbed wire...
Man, what a mess. At least you did get in contact with EBay via phone and it seems that they at least did the right thing... after a big headache.... I'd leave him some positive feedback telling him where he could shove that coin tho
I thought eBay's policy was no negative feedback extortion??? That would make me think that just providing the initial email where he threatens you with negative would be enough to get it removed. They have done this in the past. I have seen seller profiles with removed negs. Also, I would point out that the coin is TPG graded and encased. NGC is one of the appoved/accepted eBay graders, and that the coin sold as graded and eBay itself accepts that grade by NGC, therefore the coin could not be damaged or worth less than what it is graded, by definition of encapsulation, third party grading, and eBay's own acceptance of NGC. If the coin was raw, it would be a different story... Good luck.
Please post the buyer's handle as to prevent your fellow CT members from the same scam. Don't post any comments with the handle, maybe just an informal "for what it's worth" and "do with the info what you will"....
Things like this really hack me off. I've never been burned as a seller. Had to offer a full refund and get my coin back on something stupid before, but never had a problem escalate as a seller. As a buyer, oh yeah, and I have always won. (But that is because now-a-days, the buyer is always right, which isn't always true) This guy is a "Class A" scammer! Not only does he get your coin, but you had to refund him. (Even though you got your money back, this still isn't right) This is why eBay sucks.
Keep us updated! I think that is a great idea. Also, maybe just post a link to your eBay sales... That way CT users can support you by considering your items for sale. If enterprising potential buyers look at your feedback and happen to discover the name of the buyer in question, you can't be to blame...
After you file an eBay feedback extortion case, eBay will not inform even the person who submitted the case of their action. Also, self promotion and links suggestive to selling are against CT Rules
All due respect Krispy, I read that, and there are common sense exceptions. I also think common sense would dictate that being asked for your eBay handle in a thread is a different animal than 'self promotion'. I am just looking for a way to support a CT member and for other CT sellers to examine the situation to impove their own situations. I honestly believe that this is within the rules. We all know 'spam' and 'self promotion' when we see it. This isn't it.
