How does ANACS stack up to PCGS/NGC

I am looking to purchase an ANACS slabbed coin. Are they on par with their grading compared to PCGS or NGC? It is for a nickel. Should it probably grade out the same if sent to the other ones?

I think ANACS is a bit tougher. Thats with morgans anyways... But that being said i wouldnt buy because of the slab i'd judge by the coin... Any link to the coin, or a picture? That will probably get you the answer your looking for.

Greg, there are others who will refer to ANACS as the poor stepchild of the other two, but I like 'em just fine. As with everything, choose the coin and not the holder.....:)

The pictures are terrible, so that alone should be enough to not buy it. You're both right, judge the coin, and I can't see the coin good enough to judge it.

    Crisis averted.

I would like to know in general, how their grading is. Has anyone had a regrade from an ANACS slab?

Just as an experiment i had a 1921-D morgan that i had graded with ANACS and it came back at MS-65. Then i cracked it and sent it to PCGS and it came back as MS-66. Then i cracked that one and sent it to NGC and it came back as MS-66. So just for kicks i took it back to ANACS, as they are local so no shipping cost... And it was once again graded at MS-65. I personally felt it was a MS-65. So if i'm buying i go with ANACS and if i'm buying with PCGS or NGC i tend to offer or bid one grade lower. But with any coin i try to grade the coin by the picture my self and pay accordingly.

From everything I have read, you buy ANACS coins and Sell PCGS and NGC ones for the greatest financial return. It seems that even TPGs must market themselves for profitability ? They are businesses like every other and must sell. what most buyers want. Like Pro just said about the ones he re-submitted. I think you need to buy the coin, not the slab. IMHO

There are times as with any grading company that the slabs are inconsistant and just use my best judgement. If i second guess myself i dont buy the coin.

I decided to do a very unscientific experiment. Mind you the control group is far to small to yield any decent results, but here is what I just pulled. I'm currently searching 1958-D Lincolns so decided on that coin. I arbitrarily chose MS66 and pulled the first recent auction I came to on Heritage from PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. As one might expect, the highest price was the PCGS, second was NGC, and third was ANACS. You can judge from the photos yourself, but I would say the inverse of the pricing was the correct order. I chose not to bother with the time taken to post the reverses, as in each case the reverse was as good or better than the obverse.

PCGS-(I honestly don't even keep coins with this many marks in my GEM slush pile)

    NGC-

ANACS-(Granted that from the photo it doesn't seem to have the luster of the other two, but compare the marks)

Given those pictures i would buy the ANACS over the other 2 any day, but nothing new there...

Me too. Think I'm going to start buying ANACS and selling PCGS as well.

As far as resale you will almost always get more for a coin in a PCGS holder then in
Any other that,s just the way it is, this is the same grade of coin that is!

Way too many people make mistakes like this. What's the mistake ? The mistake is forgetting how to grade a coin.

What I mean by that is this. There are many criteria that make up the grade of a coin, and any 1 of those criteria can limit the grade of a coin.

In other words, the contact marks, hairlines, and eye appeal of a coin may be that of a 66. But if the luster is only that of a 64 then the coin will grade no better than a 64.

The same is true of all the criteria and they are interchangeable in the above scenario.

You have got to remember that ALL of the grading criteria are important and you cannot accurately grade a coin based on only 1 or 2 of them. You must grade the coin based on all of them !

As to the OP's question about the quality of ANACS grading - the answer depends on a couple of things.

1 - are you talking about the new ANACS or the old ANACS ?

The new ANACS grading doesn't even hold a candle to NGC & PCGS.

2 - The old ANACS grading may equal that of NGC or PCGS, but it depends on what series of coin you are talking about.

On some series NGC is tougher, on some PCGS is tougher, and some ANACS used to be tougher.

I am aware of a major collection of raw coins which were sent to PCGS with instructions to body bag any problem coins (thus leaving them raw). The failed coins were sent to ANACS, where almost all of them received full grade - all of this within the last 6 months.

However, it seems PCGS did not use ALL of the grading criteria on their coin. They had a blind eye to the severity of the marks on it and allowed a MS66 grade just the same as ANACS had errored on the luster issue. That would give the vote to NGC in this case.

I have had coins cross from ANACS to PCGS at par. Not many, but some. It's the exception, not the rule.

I must say that today's ANACS has a reputation for weaker grading for a reason. On the whole, they are much more likely to certain types of problems through - notably artficial toning.

The biggest key is this - individual collectors should judge individual coins on each individual coin's merits and shortcomings. Generalities are very dangerous. Use caution with blanket statements like "I buy ANACS and sell PCGS". The only way to do that forever would be to cross from ANACS to PCGS - which entails a low batting average.

Very true. Said another way - ignore the name on the slab and judge the coin on its own merits or the lack of them.

However - when you do this you had better be sure that you personally are qualified to make such a judgement ! What that means is that you have to have more faith in your own abilities to grade a coin than you do in the TPG.

If you are not certain or very confident that you can grade coins more accurately than NGC or PCGS can grade them - then you better pay attention to the opinion of the TPG (NGC & PCGS) and forget about trying to cherrypick coins that are in any other slab !

I appreciate all of the comments. First off, I am glad they are up there with PCGS and NGC, and not like basement slabbers like SGS or something. When it comes to me buying a slabbed coin on ebay, I have to trust, for the most part, the grade on the slab. Meaning, if it says MS66 FS for a nickel, I really need the confidence to know it will grade at least a MS65 and FS at the other TPG's.
99% of the time, the images are simply not detailed enough to discern between a 65,66, or 67. Keep in mind, my offerings on these coins are considerably lower than the "value" of the grade on the slab. So if I buy a MS66, and it turns out to be a MS65, I still have not overpaid.

But they are NOT up there with NGC and PCGS, at least the new ANACS certainly isn't.

No, they are not as bad as SGS, but they (ANACS) are no where near as good as NGC and PCGS are.

And clearly it's also a person preference as well.
