My Christmas present got sniped away from me. I bid really high on this awesome example of the Central American 2 Real coin. I was giving it to myself for Christmas. With about a millisecond to go, I placed my Bidnapper bid which blew everybody out of the water. Then, someone even sneakier than me placed their bid for $5 more and won it. This looks like a really nice example of the elusive 2 Real.

Thanks for letting me share......... the one that got away.

Just remember that $5 was only the minimum increment. They probably bid a lot higher than that -- if that makes you feel any better. (In other words, "I would've won if I'd just bid $5 higher" probably isn't true.)

I can understand why you wanted this coin. It is very nice - 2 Reales denomination of an appealing type.

Interestingly, looking in the SCWC (5th edition) it seems that the prices indicated in the catalogue are WAY OFF for this coin.
I see the same thing for Chilean Colonial and Republican coins. Very high demand for these as well. When I see one I like I know I need to bid liberally - way beyond catalogue - if I want to get it, and it does not always work either.

I've been there quite a few times and it is very frustrating! I guess that if you really want an item on ebay, you have to increase your last millisecond bid to at least $50-$100. Oh well, I'm sure another nice specimen will come... Cheers and merry xmas!

On eBay, bid late and bid the most you are willing to pay - not a penny more or less.

It's a hard motto by which to abide, but it's still true.

I don't snipe on any of my bids, I simply select the highest price I am willing to pay for the coin and place that as my one and only bid. I either win at the price I consider the value or I don't. Less hassle IMHO

Yes, I agree that the catalog is way off on this particular listing. I have seen two of the 2-Reals sell for $500 to $1000 in EF or better. I personally have only found two EF examples for sale before this one. My catalog indicates $60 to $150 in EF. IMO $150 might buy you an example in VG.

Here is a 2 Real from my collection. I bought this at the ANA in Boston.

Patience, it is not the last one that will come available .

The downside to this approach that I have found is that there are bidders out there who will enter a number of successive bids of slightly higher value until they exceed your bid. So, if the current price is $140 and your max is $250, they will enter $150, 160, 170, 180, 200, 220, 240, 260 until they are higher bid. These same people will stop at $150 if you wait to submit your bid at the last second - at which point it is too late for them.

Doesn't make sense to me but that's what they do.

    Lost fair & square

That is exactly what I did. I had Bidnapper place my maximum bid at the last possible moment. I was winning the lot for about half a millisecond. Some competitor placed an even higher max bid through their snipe program and beat me.

So, if you had known the other bid was coming in, would you have bid higher?

Nope. I would not have bid any higher. He sniped my snipe fair & square.

Very good. That shows you have the cunning and self-discipline necessary to succeed on eBay. I will admit that the coin you lost is a real beauty. I love the toning and the sun with a face rising over mountains.

I believe there was 30 bids on that item, always bid well above what you think it will go for
To avoid the snipe! especially with that popularity!

I feel for you Collect. I especially hate it when you watch the action for days and days, dreaming it will be yours. It sucks but that is the game. I have lost more snipes than won, my only comfort is that there will be something even better come along to take my money. :)

I have a snipe set up right now for an auction ending on Christmas night. Maybe Santa will be good to me.
