Obsolete German Paper

I've been meaning to post my obsolete foreign paper money for a long time now. I finally managed to take the time to take some pics of them. I grouped some of them in order of denominations. I have duplicates of almost every single one, and I tried to pick the best one out of each denom...More information about them would be wonderful. I only know the country and a little about the time period, I think they are all circa WWI WW2. They are part of a large collection from my grandfather and probably from his parents too...soooo many. Sorry for the bad pics by the way, I had a hard time figuring out how to best take them. First is 1 and 2 Rentenmark, and 5 Reichsmark. 2nd is a different 5 Reichsmark and 10 Reichsmark.

Up next are two different 20 Reichsmark notes, the 1st bearing the symbol of the 3rd reich (eagle and swastika). Followed by 50, and 100 Reichsmarks.

 

Next is 1000 Mark, a very VERY beat up 10,000 Mark

 

The reverse of the 1,000,000 Mark got stuck above...here is the obverse along with a 100,000,000 Mark and 50,000,000 Mark. It is kind of fun to say that I have hundreds of millions of marks, if only they were USD!

 

I love these hyperinflation notes of Weimar Republik Germany. I have a decent amount of those as well, but not a 50 millionen mark note. Very Nice!

 

The higher denoms are the only ones that I only have 1 or 2 of so ridiculous how high they went! Thanks!

 

The funny thing is that they kept cranking them out, but so little of them are still around. Well, at least here in the states. There may be more over in Europe.

 

Do you know what their value is? From what I remember looking up, not very much in the condition some of mine are in. I am pretty sure I have a couple hundred obsolete notes from all over Europe and I know almost nothing about some of them...makes me wish my grandpa was still around to tell me...pretty sure he picked some up when he was stationed...

 

unfortunately I don't have a guide for these obsoletes. I know that I have nicer examples and only paid a few dollars for each of them. They're not really worth too much, but great conversation pieces!

Thanks, I know they aren't worth much, weren't worth much back then either ;-) still fun to have...If I feel up to it later maybe I'll take some pics of stuff from other Euro countries

 

That would be great. I only have notes from Germany and some from Canada. Other than that, not really anything so it'll be nice to see some other notes from Europe.

 

The 5 mark note at the bottom of the first picture and the 20 mark note in the first picture of the second post were issued by the Reichskreditkassen or Government Credit Office. These notes were used by the Germans as occupation currency during WWII. They were used to pay the expenses of the German occupation at a fixed exchange rate favorable to the Germans. They circulated in most of the German-occupied territory at one time or another from the Channel Islands to the Ukraine.

 

Here is one use for that old $$$. I made this shadow box for my father who is a WWII vet. These bills were some he brought back from the ETO. I used the bills as a back drop for some commemorative medals and a ID braclet he wore while overseas.

I love these old German notes. I have a lot of them as well. Some are huge and I can't find a bill holder that they will fit in!

 

I can't find a holder for them either. I just have a bunch in a large-size currency holder in the safe just because I don't know where else to put them.

 

Nice work on that box Greg! I bet your dad loves it.

 

He does,.... I used that small "sticky-dot" tape so the bills were not ruined. They can be easily removed if need be.

Here are two notes I have that I wanted to show. One is a hundred million mark note, the highest I have ever seen, and the other a Thousand Mark note.

 

Here are a couple of well used notes from my dads bring backs. Both have an early date. Also included are some military script notes. Dad said they use to light cigars with them after a good night of poker.
