Hello, This is the first time I have ever posted to the Ancient Coin thread. Generally I'm a paper note collector, but this coin showed up at my local dealer's shop and I couldn't pass it up. I only paid a few dollars for it, around $8 but that was because neither my dealer nor I knew anything about it. Hopefully a guru here could shed some light on it for me. I am looking for general information on the coin, grade, and possible worth. Any help is greatly appreciated! Unfortunately, this was all the larger I could get the pics on my scanner.
a dracm of Azes? Azes II silver tetradrachm, 35 BC - 5 AD? Sorry, but I really mean when I say I have NO IDEA about this coin. Any idea on background or worth? Once again, thanks for any help you guys can shed om the subject!
I think he meant a drachm of Azes II, a tetradrachm is 4 drachmai(plural for drachm), but with the photos it's hard to tell the size of the coin itself, do you have a weight or diameter? The Drachmai and Tetradrachmai of Azes II were often made of a billon silver, a debased silver. The horseman on the one side of your coin somewhat resembles that of the Azes II drachms and tetradrachms, but it looks a little different. I haven't a clue as to origin. If it is Indo-Scythian, that is an area I know little of, so I would trust Ardatirion's opinion. Closer photos would likely help him or others give a more definitive ID, if possible.
I meant just plain Azes. Not all scholarship recognizes the existence of two rulers named Azes. We would need better pictures to be more sure, as well as weight and diameter to establish the denomination.
Oh, no problem. The weight is 1.94 grams and it measures 1/2 inch. I have included these pictures I took with my camera to try and get a little more definition for identification purposes. Thanks again for your help.
