Is this a cud?

As I was doing some rolls searching today, I came across this coin. What caught my eye at first was the luster that this coin had. Upon further examination, using a 4x magnifier, I noticed this, what I would call a cud. Could someone please confirm if this is a cud. Also as I am a newbie, could someone explain why? I bought the cherry pickers guide but still having a challenge determining what is what. Any suggestions would help. One last thing what grade if any would you place on this coin. All feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks coinmaster. Where can I find the value of this coin and is it worth sending in to get graded. It only cost me face value.

 

I'd say it's worth maybe $4 to $5 bucks, and no, I don't think it is worth grading, unless you want to. Nice find, though, especially for finding it in change! Congrats!! :thumb:

Don't bother, costs of listing, plus final cost fees and paypal/shipping/etc will just eat your profits.

 

This is the only documented cud on the 1979 D penny. It is listed as LC-79D-1. Very cool find, I'd guess it could sell for up to $8 on the bay. You can spend $20 to have it graded, and if you did, you'd probably be able to sell it for as much as $15.

 

As stated above, yes, it is a cud. A small cud but a cud nonetheless. A cud occurs when a planchet is struck by a damaged die where a piece of the die has broken off. When the die strikes the planchet the planchet metal flows up into the void where the portion of the die broke off. The corresponding location on the other side of the coin is often weakly struck because of the lack of striking pressure at the cud.

 

Thanks for the explanation Hobo. I am really considering placing this on ebay. Even if I would net profit a few dollars this would certainly allow me to purchase some raw coins that I need for my collection. After reading the posts, I will not even bother sending this in for grading. Its not cost effective.

Robbudo - Where can you find this information on cud documentation? I found a nice 1983 P nickel with a big cud on it and would like to find out more about it.

Did not even think about that Hobo. I need to research that comment. I have never sold anything here before. I wonder if theres a market for that here.
