I have been on a nickel craze this week. I bought my very first slabbed coin today! It is graded by PCGS. I really liked the look of this one. Care to guess the grade?
Maybe the scan/photo doesn't show it off that well. I focused in on the areas noted. The big thing for me was his hair. It didn't look sharp or crisp. But hey, I'm not a Jefferson Nickle dude at all.
I will say ms 61, but like others I am not real familiar with this series, wait till lehigh chimes in, he knows these like the back of his hand
I have not seen them, but I definitely do! I don't know why, but I'm on the Jefferson kick lately and have purchased a few toners while I try and complete my entire BU set. Ill tell the grade when I hear from a few more peeps.
You guys are tough. Since it is in a PCGS holder, I am going to say MS65, but this coin would most likely grade MS66 by NGC. As discussed, weak hair detail plagues the entire series and will have no effect on the grade. Above MS65, luster becomes the key component. I like the luster on the coin but it looks satin to me and that in combination with the rather dark toning and some minor distractions in the focal areas should prevent a premium gem grade by PCGS. NGC is more lenient with surface flaws and more appreciative of subtle rainbow toning.
If there was any doubt Lehigh knows what hes talking about, it's gone now! He is correct! Also, it was $12.
BTW, here are the populations of the 1949-D by grade: AU58-----1 MS60-----0 MS61-----0 MS62-----1 MS63-----5 MS64-----43 MS65-----61 MS66-----239 MS67-----95/0 Anybody want to change their guess?
If you didn't see, I posted the slab. You were correct. Care to tell me if you think this would get a cameo grade?
Yeah, we posted at the same time. I will respond about that coin in that thread. BTW, very nice pickup on the 1949-D, I like it very much. FWIW, here is what an NGC MS66 looks like.
