Im new to collecting and not really sure what it is. I work in a bank and pull the older/unusual stuff. I'll zoom in on pic, dont know if that helps. Found a site that say 1965 DDO is somewhat rare; should it be graded? any advice?
Don't angle the picture, its easier to tell if its DD if the shot is taken from straight above. Besides the DD, thats a really nice 65 that was pulled from circ.
I still dont think it's a true DD, if that is the only area that shows the doubling then I am sticking with MD (Mechanical doubling http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglossary/g/mechanical_doub.htm ) therefore it's not worth getting graded...I searched long and hard for a 65 DD Quarter and can not find any info about it. Does it mean that it's not out there..no maybe I am looking in the wrong area. Hopefull I am wrong here cause it could be a rarity.
I just looked at the reverse, which is similiar to the front..Specifically in some of the lettering in "Quarter Dollar", "United States" and "Plurbus Unum". If it were MD, is that normal to occur? Will take a pic and post later today. Thanks again.
No, most are quite clear DDs (and very nice ones at that). As for the 1965 in-question, from what I can tell, it appears to be MD/SD. Actually, I almost guarantee it. Sorry.
I don't see any notching on the OP's coin which leads me to believe it's MD. If you look at the examples in the reference link, they all have notching with the exception of the last pic.
I disagree with the prices listed on that site as the 1970-D DDO is way more difficult to locate than those 1970-D DDR coins. I price my 1970-D DDO which is an AU55 at $1,000 since only 2 have made the grade at PCGS. Only 5 have been graded at ANACS. The DDR's on the other hand, can be found in Mint Sets and appear to be readily available with 11 FS-801's at PCGS and 15 FS-802's at PCGS. ANACS has 4 801's and 49 802's. As for the OP's coin. Definitely looks like machine doubling but thats one of the reasons CONECA exists. To identify and catalog these varieties. I would suggest he/she submit the coin for examination just to be sure. ( http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/ ) Its slow to load but follow the links for the attribution and examination services. You can't go wrong. P.S. There are significantly many more DDO and DDR coins out there for folks to find as demonstrated by the numismedia link. Some are hugely significant while others not so much and MOST do not enjoy the publicity that the 55/55 DDO Lincoln enjoys. Given the shear number of 55/55's graded by the TPG's, you wonder why some of these Washington's don't grab much larger premiums. The answer is simple: Publicity and Popularity!
