This may be my best acquisition of the year. I have been waiting patiently for this monster to arrive ever since I hit that confirm payment button on my paypal screen and watched that 8 large disappear. And today was the day that the mailman delivered. I am now the proud owner of the highest graded 1946-D Jefferson Nickel in existence. In addition to the top pop status, the coin has incredible rainbow toning. Without further ado, here it is: Coin Description: The obverse boast glorious deep burnt orange with splashes of pale blue, lavender, grass green, and yellow. The same color scheme on the reverse yields to very attractive rainbow bands at the lower periphery. Enjoy! And do you know what I did right after I opened the package?            wait for it!            I cracked that sucker out and stuck it in my album! HA! HA!-------MADE YA LOOK!
I was trying to figure out a way to delicately say that doesn't look like a 68 to me. Then I scrolled down.
p.s. still a nice coin, and frankly I'm surprised it's in NNC plastic. Tell me, do you think that PCGS/NGC would slab it, and if so at what grade?
haha definitely got me! My first though was "damn thats an awfully weak reverse strike for a 68, maybe it's a bad pic??" Still looks pretty good though! Nice pickup!
I think it would go MS64 at PCGS. The luster is a little subdued on the obverse. The surfaces are MS65 quality and it has a chance at MS65 from NGC. Technically, I didn't lie in my OP. When I said "8 large", I meant $8 and if this coin is MS65, it is a pretty good deal.
haha,, u dog.... had me hook line and sinker just because i haven't seen this side of your humor before.. nicely done. Nice coin, especially for the $.... I've taken some nice coins in NNC slabs for nice discounts before,,, usually cent, but have seen others that peeked my interest. I think there is potential there for folks who can tell if the coin in the holder and in the pic is an honest no problem candiate or not...... I'm 3 of 4 with them...... pretty happy,,, but like yours, be ready to receive a coin a grade or few below what's on the holder.
The sad thing is that I couldn't tell the difference if it was true or false. I've never understood toning or the fascination of having something so marginally better that I couldn't tell the difference. I know you have some of the best nickels around and I'm glad you can appreciate them. But then again, there aren't many like me who are fascinated with the minutia of die variations on early large cents either.
Just now getting to this thread! $8 for that toner sounds pretty awesome to me! 64, 65, 68, whatever the grade is, I love it!
I have picked up 2 nice coins in NNC holder so while they are rare....you can sometimes get bargains in their holders
I missed the original post - but yes you did make me look. My first thought was no way on the coin and the grade - no way Paul paid for that. Then I had to scroll down to see the holder - LOL - good one.
