    Interesting mess.

$271.50 in half dollars from a machine at a bank.

    Net result:

    1 1967 Kennedy
    1 1964 Kennedy

    $265.50 in clad halves.

    And the junk:

    6 pennies
    1 watch battery
    2 coins 5 Francs France 1971 and 1973
    1 20 cent piece Australia 1981
1 Knotts Berry Farm souvenir token
1 Mexico one peso coin 1971
    2 batting cage tokens
1 token "Grand Cafe One Dollar/ Andrea's Cha Cha Club 1998"
1 magician's coin. One side is the reverse of a Kennedy half dollar, other side is the reverse of a Mexican peso, about 1971. I found the other half of a Kennedy half, the female half as well, in the bag.

So I made seven bucks or so, valuing the "junk" all at zero.

    But I had some fun.

At some point I'm going to bag up my various tokens. I've built up a fair number, but I'm not a token collector.

Local newspaper classifieds, look for "Public Auction" or "Storage Lien" listings.

Best advice I got : Go to 3 complete auctions before you ever place your first bid.

Second best advice : have a truck and/or a trailer, and be ready to haul away a BUNCH of someone else's crap. :too-funny:

Found a really nice 1942 Nickel in the last roll I opened. Nice enough to replace the one I had in the Dansco for 50 years. Wonder where these AU coins come from ? This had to be AU55 to AU58 I think. The steps were really detailed.

I often find myself wondering the same thing, but most of the coins around here that I find that are older lack the subtle details like steps, which leads me to think they've been dumped by people who realized they're not worth much over face.

I have found a few cents that had glue or paper on the reverse, so I believe those came from folders. I did FBLs, so I am nearly certain it came from a folder. But not nickels. But when you get one with details in the steps, that is something. I have a few MS that the steps are nearly non existent due to die deterioration. Perhaps you hit it. Why keep a non PM coin that will never be worth more than face. I mean, make room for copper or something, right ?

Um, like a nickel, currently containing 6.229 cents worth of nickel and copper? :)

But the same 5 cents in copper is like 13 cents in melt. If you can only save $100,000 worth of coins, I think nickels are going to get swapped out. That's what we were meaning. I agree with Merc, because it makes the most sense. Dealers and others are cashing the nickles in even in higher grades because the numismatic value hasn't gone up enough to warrant keeping them.

I re-roll and dump every one, but I keep all the copper cents.

Considering that when the euro came into existence 85% of the coins were melted down, these aren't really junk at all.

The last roll of nickels I searched gave me a 1938 in about AU-50ish. I was pretty happy with it.
