I have heard that it happens once and a while. Well, it happened for me today. I went to deposit a check and a man was just finishing up depositing some "odd" coins. I overheard something about old big dollars. When it was my turn I asked to buy them. One was a 1990 Silver Eagle. The rest of the odd stuff is not big deal. I may keep the gold plated for the kids. Sweet.

Yeah, but uninformed people are always depositing collectible coins at face value, even in boom times.

I imagine the number of actual collectors spending or depositing ASEs at face value is going to stay pretty close to zero no matter how tough times get. We all know we can get more for them at the skeeviest CA$H FOR GOLD storefront.
