Just got my results back from my latest submission and they called my 1917 standing liberty quarter a 1917-S. I don't see any indications of a mint mark and they also called it AU details cleaned. I was pretty confident it would get a mint state grade and possibly even get full head but oh well I guess....
I can't tell from those photos whether it looks cleaned or not, never mind worn. If they say it's cleaned, I trust their judgement over mine -- but I wonder if they got the entire label wrong (i.e. it was supposed to go with another coin), instead of just a data-entry issue on the mint?
One does wonder. The coin does look like it's possibly cleaned, but whether AU or UNC details, I'm not sure. Since they added a mintmark that wasn't there, it might just be a mechanical error and a label meant for an entirely different coin, as mentioned. Who knows? You definitely need to get in touch with Customer Service. (And I'm sorry about that. It's never a fun experience.)
I just got a 1917 T1 that I cracked out of a SEGS MS64+ holder and it came back MS63 FH. In some ways your coin looks better than mine but I tend to agree with the grade; it looks cleaned. The feathers on the reverse of yours look flatter.
I tried to examine the obverse to determine whether I thought it was cleaned, but my childish, lizard brain kept focusing in on the same spot. The spot is a bit left of center, about a quarter way down from the top.
Well you have two options. Leave as is or call and send it back. I can’t tell from the photos and it’s best not to judge a coin by photos. Either they made a mistake on the label by adding the “S” or they put the wrong label on your coin.
Good advice, but my decision would be conditional on the nature of the "Mistake". If it was a label swap, and your coin actually graded MS, then I'd send it back. However, if the grade is accurate and they accidentally put the S on there, then I'd keep it. The TPGS mislabeling probably adds value in the eyes of people that might collect such things, and in any case, it makes for a cool conversation piece
That one, I'd send back. They messed up on the mint mark, so maybe they messed up on everything else.
I can't disagree with the cleaning as they probably have better techniques than I do to detect such things, however, since they botched the label they should regrade for free.
