An acquaintance of mine asked if I could tell her anything about this 50 Peso note. She says that the signature is that of Che Guevara. Does anyone know when it may have been issued or what it may be worth? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Chris
nice find...is the date 1961? can't make it out by you picture. As you can see Esso Standard oil co & The United Fruit company is being put down by the new regime. Most all Cuban notes have pictures as such on the rev.side. Is the note crisp? Looks in great shape. http://cgi.ebay.com/Che-Guevara-Sig...828?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5883a0fcd4 here ya go a note just like for sale $149.00
Yes, it is a 1961 note. I missed the date myself......should have worn my glasses! Since I don't collect paper currency and know nothing about their grading, I'm only guessing that this would be in the VF-XF neighborhood (if there is such a thing). There is a crease down the center and two very small rust-colored spots on the portrait in the middle of his forehead at the hairline. I took a look at the one you found on eBay. What is the significance of "MUESTRA" stamped on it? Was that put there by the government? From the seller's brief description, I get the impression that this makes his more valuable. I would think it would lessen its value, but that is just a guess. Would the one I posted be worth more or less than the one on eBay? Thanks! Chris
It looks like yours is Pick #P98, which has catalog value of $35 in VF, $150 in UNC. Your description of the condition puts it between those two, and of course catalog value is often quite different (in both directions) from selling value. The one on eBay with the overprint is probably in the Specialized catalog, which I don't have, but could very well be worth more than yours, if the overprint is more rare. And yes, my understanding is that is Che Guevara's signature. I don't collect Cuban banknotes, so I don't know any details, I just Googled it Dave
Does anyone know why it is a specimen? It seems to me that it would be very easy to have that stamp made at any local shop. How do we know that the seller on eBay didn't do just that? Thanks, guys! Chris
I agree. It doesn't have an unusual serial number, so it's not facially evident why it is a specimen note.
$200 isn't that rare of a note, so many of these were made and there are many out there to compare against. A specialized catalog of Cuba notes would also help as it would probably have a good view of exactly what the overprint looked like, which might help in determining a fake. But yes, without some sort of expert opinion or research, you're trusting the seller on it. Dave
