Really! They use MS70? Also, I did not request an exchange, but rather a refund. So I will not be getting any of these back from them.
Yes they do, or other coin dips. Doesn't much matter what you requested - they and only they decide on whether to buy the coins, replace the coins, or dip the coins and return them to you. You don't have any say in the matter unfortunately.
Hmmm... I understand the Mint may/does rinse coins with some sort of solution during production. The remainder of this substance appears on the surface of the coins that I received, coins which are brand new and just released. In this case, I do know that I did not receive coins that someone else had previously returned. So the Mint / PBGS could not have cleaned and redistributed these particular coins. I'm not sure how to even verify that the Mint or PBGS is in the practice of cleaning and redistributing returned coins to their customers. Can you? I don't entirely doubt the practice, and it certainly seems plausible, but I will say that my say in the matter was in rejecting the inferior products I received under my subscription order. I returned all of the problem coins (5 out of 8 units) I ordered for my money back. I have subsequently canceled all future subscription orders for this product as I am uncertain I wish to buy these coins direct from the Mint in future. This product quality issue is not excusable. They cater to collectors and fail to run enough quality control checks before rushing these items out to consumers. These forums are available for their scrutiny and can utilize them to perfect their QC. Consumers do have rights and can/should communicate problems to businesses they are dealing with if they are not satisfied with something. I have done this by returning my items within the parameters of the Return Policy, and have even written a letter indicating the problem I found with these coins, the reason for the return, and sent photographic evidence of the issue for their convenience in dealing with the issue. I don't care to hear comments that it will do no good, that no one will listen or care or even see the letter that I sent in-- and if that is the case upon the return of this product, that is the company's (the Mint / PBGS') problem, hence why they are loosing a customer. I did the right thing. Others can only do as much if they are dissatisfied with their purchases. I documented my experiences here to encourage and demonstrate for others a similar course of action.
Apparently I misundersttod something, namely the PBGS part. I assumed that was a typo and that you meant PCGS. PCGS is who I was talking about. I don't even know who PBGS is. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
It's unfortunate that there are quality problems on some of these new 2010 ASE's. My order came last week and I only viewed two out of the twenty that I ordered. Those two looked impressive.....no problems. After reading both threads yesterday in this Forum about the quality issues, I had to check the remainder of my order. The remainder of my Eagles looked great. On the bottom of the Mint Package Box is a Bar Code Sticker. I would like to inquire to see if these problem Proofs were die cast minted at a certain time or date. All my Proofs show a bar code with the following numbers:
Sorry about that, computer problem here. Let me pick up where I left off. The numbers that I have on the 2010 ASE Bar Code sticker are: 7 04785 11094 6 Is this just a general product number? Does this define a date the coin was minted. I'm curious if these problem coins came from a certain run date
Correct, same on mine and all the others I ordered. The actual product codes that the US Mint uses are short 3-4 character alpha-numeric codes. For 2010-w Proof ASE it's listed on the product page and on your invoice line items as PS1
I did have some trouble getting the coins out of the velvet holder... so I pulled out that little velvet thing the coin holder sits in to push the plastic holder out... but I noticed in the bottom of the velvet flip case it has the #97 on one and #98 on the other eagle I received. Do any of you guys and gals have these #'s in the bottom of the velvet flip box? I was thinking perhaps that was the # they came off the press. I have no idea though... I'm putting this in the other 2010 silver eagle thread as well.
Thanks everyone for your posts on the bar code information. My order was from a U.S. Mint subscription. I was wondering when my ASE's were minted. For example: The U.S. Mint P & D packaged Quarter and Dollar Rolls have dates on their white mint package box. I'm still curious though............Is there anyway to investigate data on which date your specific ASE's were minted? Thanks again guys, Sam
Those items are sealed in boxes with date/time stamps on them, while other products like the ASEs are not. I believe this is in part due to their limited nature, as opposed to being an annual coin with the same design year after year. Your 2010-w Proof ASEs have been minted in 2010 since about September 19th-- I believe that to be the Mint's stated date they announced Minting began. The coins are not otherwise identifiable by time/date of minting.
If the coin I receive looks bad who pays for return shipping? I ordered only one coin so if I have to ship it back with insurance I'm not sure it is cost effective.
You pay shipping and it is recommended to insure the merchandise for the value of the contents, for your protection. Ask yourself if the cost of keeping a $50 dollar problem coin that is always going to have a problem cost effective? I think it's better to return for an exchange or refund of your money to cut your losses while you still have the recourse of the Mint's return policy in your favor.
Hey Chris, Great thread - Finally received mine today and there is an extremely faint haze near the stars on the reverse but not so bad that I would return it. Also mine has a couple very minor areas on the rims on the reverse(near f in Fine and l in Dollar). Almost looks like the inside edge did not get the satin finish? So minor again I would not have noticed if I wasn't looking hard for any issue that might cause me to return it. Best Regards ~ Darryl
Thanks for the pics Darryl. I'm glad you got your coin and they pass the muster. I'm still curious as to whether or not these haze problems can be considered anything effecting grading, or if it's just an issue with personal eye appeal. I guess time will tell as people submit them themselves for grading, if we see any coins slabbed with these hazy issues.
