That's a good way to introduce a new collector to numismatics. I do that as well. I also try to light the coin spark by giving them my past issues of Coin World and Numismatic News.
I was introduced to the hobby more than 30 years ago by the old school of gentlemen who passed down their old Bowers, Stacks, and Spink catalogs to me.
    These were old school collectors.
Imagine me in the mid 1980's, and I'm a high school kid with a limited budget and a willing attitude to learn, and a coin club full of old men with vitalis in the hair slicked back and a room full of Partagas y LaGloria Cubana cigar smoke. Aaah, those were the days, where you didn't have to go to the bank for wheat, you grocery store had rolls of wheat on the shelves and at the cash register. These guys passed down their World Coin News and Coin World to me, albeit it was cigar stained, they were free.:)

Dumping my halves yesterday I found a 1928 Wheatie by the coin counter at the bank.

    :D

I purchased a box of nickels for a change from the halves. I find nickels fun to search because you always find some old ones (even though most aren't worth much....it still is fun).

    I'll post results later

I got a box of nickels from the bank today, but to my dismay they are all brand spankin new 2010's...I think i need to stop roll searching as the last box of cents were mostly all brand new as well. ugh...

Aren't most of the 2010 coins carrying premiums?

Dropped by a bank, they had a roll... ends were like, glued shut. Weird.

Busted it open, 11 1964's, and 9 1974's. My best roll ever by percentage of silver and dollar value of silver. It was right across from the coin store I dropped by to buy some supplies. He offered me $9 each. :D

probably, but how do i tell for sure without cracking them open if their ALL 2010? all i can see is the end coins and their both shinny new 2010s.

I'm about halfway through my box of nickels and I FINALLY found my 2009 D nickel and will fill that hole in my Dansco!!!!!!

Actually, I've found several of them. Will post a final count later, but I was very excited to finally find this coin. It has been selling at a nice little premium, so it was fun to find.

No silver war nickels yet, but I have found one dateless Buffalo.

Box of halves... nothing but a 2004. I think it's time to try another bank. The most I have found in a brinks paper roll box is two 40%'s.

I found a northern marianas quarter this morning. I have now found every single state quarter in change. This one took over a year.

Got $50 of Halves yesterday at the bank inside WalMart on a whim. Just cracked the last roll and about fell outta my chair.

Upon laying them out edgewise in my hand I noticed only a single copper clad edge, and two coins that looked different from the rest. Here were the results

    1 - 1971-D (Looks Uncirculated)
    2 - 1969-D
    3 - 1968-D
    9 - 1967-P
    2 - 1966-P
    1 - 1965-P

    And the kickers....

    1 - 1943-S (VG-8)
    1 - 1941-S (F-12)

The only Kennedy half I ever got before this of any worth was a 1964 that came out of a teller's tray. I know the 65-70s have less silver content but I never imagined I'd land so many at a single try, let alone some Liberty Walking Halves. Needless to say, I'm still a little stunned. I'm ready to see if they have any more left there LOL.

    Cheers,
    Ako

 Nice find, Ako! It's just a matter of being the first one to come in after the right deposit gets made...

    Thanks JeffB!
I guess my question is who on earth would make a deposit like that? Some little old lady with Alzheimers? It's very encouraging to hear if this isn't such a rare occurrence and can only hope I can do just half as good some time in the near future.

I went back today and got the last 3 rolls they had, but off course my luck had already been cashed in. =P I am very new to all of this, but it's hard to imagine that the bank tellers themselves don't cherrypick more. When I asked the girl today if she had come across anything that was interesting lately, she said she didn't as far as coins were concerned but offered me 2 silver certificates that she couldn't get any other customers to take. Is this kind of thing common you think?

    Cheers,
    Ako

I've seen far too few people who actually know what silver coinage is and how to identify it. My 52 year old mother didn't have a clue... My 13 year old sister, nothing... Until I told/showed them.

Wow, I think I may have just found a 1992 Philly Close AM. Trying not to get my hopes up before I can get it under a loupe.

Just looked at it compared to another 1992... the A of AMERICA is different... I think I have a winner.

Yep yep. Most "profitable" (in terms of amount of silver per roll) find I ever made was by simply asking while making a deposit myself. "Hey...anyone got any halves?"

Drive through teller had 3 rolls that had been dropped off just a few minutes prior...said she wasn't looking forward to dealing with them every night, did I want em?

    *shrug*

    Sometimes ya just get lucky.

Keep looking at it. Damn near positive, leaving work in about 15-25 minutes... should be home around 8.

If it turns out to be what I think it is, it'll be the fourth known, as far as I can tell.
