I am curious also. I will be interested to see if any of the numismatic publications that covered the anticipated release of these coins will leap to the forefront of these coins' problems, if enough cases surface.

From the reports so far, sounds like a high percentage (well over 50%). Some say an acetone dip removes haze and milk spots but I'm not an expert and won't try that!

Wow! I don't want to do an acetone dip while I can return these to the Mint for a refund. May as well just buy PR70s slabbed rather than play hit or miss with the Mint sending out more of these if I return for exchange.

Any reports on the abrasions on the frosted parts? I saw several that had these and heard of some more on here.

Just got the word from NGC about the submission cutoff date to get the early release label.

    Dear Mr. silvers59,

Thank you for your email. The coins must be in our facility on or

before December 23rd to qualify for the Early Release Designation.

    Thank you,

    Lisa

I'm still examining my coins, so far I haven't seen any hazing that is shown in Krispy's photos. I can only see one spot on one of my coins. Here are the photos, the first is the original frame, then I cropped it a couple of times to get a clear shot of it. If you look to the left of the 'W' (about 8mm) in the first photo you can just see it. If you look dead center on the third photo you can see it much clearer. To me, quite honestly, it looks like a piece of Styrofoam. It doesn't reflect back so I know it's on the coin. Just so you know, I use an illuminated stand magnifier (Bausch & Lomb) with a 2x and 5x lens when looking at and taking photos of coins.

Looks nice. Not sure what that spot/thing may be. Maybe some debris clinging to the inside of the capsule by static electricity, unless actually on the coin as you believe it to be.

I just returned from the USPS. I shipped 5 units of my problem coins back to PBGS Customer Service. I requested a refund and included printed images of the haze problem along with a letter explaining the issue. I implored them to look into this as both a quality control issue and one that ultimately results from a problem of production that remains after minting. I also offered them to contact me if they needed to. I doubt I'll hear anything about this ever from the Mint or PBGS.

I kept three units, two are definitely staying in my collection and are problem free. The third coin has very minimal haze on the reverse near a wing tip but otherwise looks problem free. I still have time to return it but may keep it in the event the haze tones nicely over time or these hazy coins become some oddity. Doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

Thanks, krispy, I'll look even closer for hazing but so far haven't seen any. There is however a lot of stuff (hair, fuzz??) stuck to the inside of the capsule. those are easy to identify as they show as a mirror image in the field areas. Further investigation with a 5x and 10x loop has, so far, turned up nothing. I think that I'll be keeping my coins and sending them to NGC. I need a PF69 to continue my set but, if they were to all come back as PF70 and the one at PF69, then I'll have one at a cheaper price than most places are selling for as I have a coupon for free grading. I never even thought about the hazing turning into toning. That would be an interesting, ongoing science project.

Just got my 5 2010 ASE's no spots however one has in the "M" in America what apears to look like teeth marks. Not as in human but pliers or tooling. Another one I had to open the airtight as I could not tell if it was a scratch or a FO. The mark was thru the rays of the sun on the obv. turned out to be a small thin sliver of plastic from the air tight. It was so tight even with my loop I could not tell with out openning the air tight if it was a mark or a FO. I'm very disapointed with the US mint again. I had to return my 2010 silver proof set for another now need to retun one ASE due to the teeth marks. Maybe the US Mint should take some guideance from Perth, or the RCM! Inever have issues in quality from those two mints!

RCM still hasn't told us exactly why 95% of their coins develop "Milk Spots". Currently they are passing it off by saying that they have no control as to the manufacturing and that their coins are only sold as bullion.

I have never had any issues with the RCM products....As an American from the US of A...I wish I wish I could say the same. I have been buying from the US mint going on 40 years! Let's have a look at the 5 oz. America the Beatiful coins. There's been so many reports that they can't get them minted. Perth mints 1/2 kilo and kilo coins that are perfect! What does the US mint lack that others have one word 'Quality'

By far, the quality of RCM products best anything I've seen from the U.S. Mint. Not because they have better equipment, it's because they have more pride in the quality of work. Sad but true.

Going by just this one coin release, the 2010-W Proof ASE, given collector anticipation and it's hotly anticipated release buzz after two years without this product offering with the Mint's high retail pricing, their mulling around to get these coins back into production and available to customers, there really is NO room for repeated blunders: email snafus, Quality Control allowing problem coins with 'haze' and debris in the capsules to go out to the customer. There is no excuse for it. No apology can cover them only better service and more transparency in the problems they are plagued with will reveal whether it's worth dealing with such poor customer service for premium priced products.

The thing that ticks me off the most right now is I have a broken leg. I can't drive and for the sake of one coin I need to go to the post office and ship it back! With a seven day return time frame this is another reason I'm done with the mint.

  18. krispy

    krispy krispy

That's terrible. Sorry to hear about your leg and the inconvenience this causes you. Again, for just one coin, the various carriers 'schedule a pick up' isn't really an option either. I walked my return to the post office, used the automated postal center machine, the weight of the 5 coins being returned basically only warranted Priority Mail options, track and confirm delivery, plus insurance of the contents came to $12.90. Considering what it already cost me to ship the five coins I waited two years for, the shipping wasted going back and forth cost about as much as one ounce of silver at spot price. Whatcha gonna do... these are the crazy things we do for our hobby, but it doesn't excuse the quality issues Mint customers have come to be burdened with. Again, at these retail prices, return shipping should be covered. Zappos does it and they ship expense retail items in mass volume everyday. I've never had a problem with that company nor the shoes I get through them.

krispy, you gave an excellent example by mentioning Zappos. They are one of the best customer oriented companies that I've bought from.

Yes I always buy from Zappos two reasons good products and customer service...but lets be real you do pay them for shipping in the cost of their shoes, but however with that said ....they are still cheaper buying a name brand than going to the Mall! I know this is not a forum about shoes however it is about money and when one is spending money one should get good customers service. Rule #1 in customer service is take care of the customer...and if you do everything else will fall into line. When I returned my 2010 silver proof set it took 6 calls to the US Mint to get a Postage Paid return sent to me. Thats pretty sad....but I will call them tomorrow as I have no other choice I'm struck at home can't drive or walk for that matter. Thanks Krispy for your concern...

Ok, maybe this has been covered here and I just haven't seen it BUT, I received a shipping notice for the 3 ASE proofs from my subscription order and they should arrive soon. However, I also ordered 10 more coins the day they went on sale but haven't received a shipped notice yet. They don't seem to be sold out so are they just waiting for the December 2nd or 3rd ship date to send the rest out? Did they just keeping taking orders and plan fill them until they run out and I may never get the additional 10 coins? I know we haven't reached the ship date yet but clearly they are shipping coins.
