I'm just getting into detecting. Purchased a Garrett 250 and a Pioneer about a month ago...

Mind posting a picture of that gold bar? That would be cool to see!

Geez. Find what looks like a gold bar and then find out it isn't gold. That must've been a bummer anti-climax. Sorry to hear that :crying:

Work hard, get good grades... scholarships will pay for school. Otherwise, get a FT job and have them pay or subsidize the cost of an education for you, if you're really that worried about it.

My student loans total $250 a month... for a decade! Shoulda just got a FT job.

That's not even the color of gold.
    Improper markings etc.
If you find bars they're Jerry bars. Usually a thief or miner would take a lot of loose small gold, melt it down, pour into a mold and then stash the bar. They're quite plentiful since many forgot to retrieve them.

your story is crazy benjy! i probably would have done something like saw it also:(. it is hard to be patient in that situation.

i need to get a metal detector. my grandfather had 2 before he died, i am not sure what happened to them though.

i was digging to put up a fenced enclosure for my dog and found some loose gems. i have no clue what they are. a few could possibly be diamonds, but with my luck probably not.

anyone know a good site to check out to see if they are worth anything? i have no need for these things!!

You can see a jeweler or geologist.

I concur. Take it to a gemologist or jeweler!!! :thumb:

Or you can do what someone on here did with a "gold bar" he found...... :goofer:

    Just kidding around!
Take it to a gemologist or jeweler!!!

so i went to a few jewlers today downtown and they were no help. i was told by all of them since they don't buy them they don't even want to look at them. even though a few look like they could be diamonds!

the two GOOD coin shops down there tried helping me out, but they really couldn't give me much info. so i am going to find a gemologist..

in other news, i think my backyard is filled with treasure! not only did i find those 22 gems. today i found boxes of silverware.. i think it may be actual silver, because of how heavy each thing is. and after looking the company up, they seem to be an expensive brand. the company is reed&barton. i tried looking up info on the actual set that i got. but the markings that indicate the year, don't match with anything i have seen. there is a spot near the brand name that is worn that looks like it used to say sterling on it. so i got a few questions for silver people.

most of them are toned just like a silver coin would be. does that indicate silver? or does other metal tone?
any tests i could try before i take them to a jewler? i only ask that because i know a place that will buy silver and gold filled items and i don't want the silverware to be actual silver and get filled price.

i need an actual metal detector! my mother is probably not to happy i am digging all the yard up. the point was to build a fence so my pit bull doesn't destroy all of the yard and i am doing more damage...:goofer:

i snapped a few pics but my camera went dead, so i hurried up.. o yea, i found a 30" 14k gold necklace back there!

Precut stones? They look like gems not diamonds. If authentic worth a couple bucks each
nice chain that's a design that isn't around too frequently
as for the silverware I can't make out the marlins but it should say ARG. Sterling silver or .925.
These are typical marlins for silver.
The ARG. Indicates about .800 silver give or take in the range of .750 to .825
most of these have been destroyed they have more collector value then melt value.
However the silverware you posted seems to be plated.
    Nice finds keep it up.

its hard to tell from the pictures but the first sorta shows the tone i was talking about. like rainbow tone you find on coins. but yea, there is a ton of black on it.

as for markings it says reed&barton then beside it there is a 4 with what looks like a cross. on the other side of reed&barton there is a name plate but it has black over it. there is about 75 forks/spoons/knives. the ones i went threw so far all have that name plate worn off.

as for the gems, i know not all of them are diamonds! there are a few though that could be. also i have no clue what they could be, i know some gems are worth money. i was just trying to figure out what they could be. i would hate to just toss them out, if they are worth anything.

Hoping to get one and spend sometime searching my old town/neighborhood. I don't think it's been searched because most people who do this would be afraid to go there. I know the land my mom lives on was owned by my great great aunt since the 1920s, and there used to be an old beer joint there when I was a kid.
