Most of us half searchers use about $1k for searching halves... I don't really have extra money on my hands as much as I made extra money available for this explicit purpose. If you find a place with some good half dollar supplies, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take out a loan of $1k and search with it, then sell enough silver every month to pay back the loan within a year.

4 boxes of halves: 3 skunks, last box 1-90% & 2-40%. Box of dimes, skunk. Box of nickels, 103 Pre-60 (most ever for me), 1 silver war nickel, and filled a hole with a 1942-D.

Afternoon leg of the half-dollar search:

First 4 banks & 2 groceries -- no halves, period. (One teller did have a pair of silver quarters in her tray where the halves would go; no, she wasn't interested in selling them.)

Next bank -- "we have 10 rolls; how many do you want?" I smelled a dumping ground, and I think I was right; got two rolls, one entirely 1996, the other mostly 1971. Decided not to try my luck with any more of them.

    Next bank, actually a credit union -- 13 Ikes; 8 halves, 1 40%, 2 90%.

    Next bank -- none

Next bank -- none; "We had a few dollars worth, but someone came by a little while ago and bought them." (Better drive faster!)

    Next bank -- 8 halves, 2 40%

    Next bank -- 1 clad

    Next bank -- none

It's all about luck and timing. When I found the 12 40%'ers this morning, the teller said "we just broke our last roll, and this is all we have left" -- wonder just how many 40%'ers or better came through there, and how long ago?

Why don't you order rolls from the banks that you have accounts with?

I'd give it a shot... See if you can find out who supplies who and try each supplier.

Nothing in the last 10 rolls of cents, but I did get a 1955 D nickle in change. Spent the rest of my time putting 2x2 flips into vinyl sheets and clearing out as much of the junk as I could.

I ended up with a roll and a half of 40% silver Kennedy Half Dollars at face. I also found a few 90% half dollars.

Nada in the next ten cent rolls I went through today. But did get an interesting 1984 D in change at Arby's. I thought it might be the DDO with the doubled ear, but it looks like a triple line on the D. Sending pics to an expert.

Here is a pic of the 1967 that I had found last week. The picture shows wear on the face an hair, and doesn't show how mirrored it is with some light film on it, but it is more mirrored than any business strike coin I've ever seen in hand. So, after looking into it, I do believe that it is an SMS coin.

    Here it is:

    1. We closed out our credit-union account, and I'd rather use my bank as a dump than as a source -- the tellers they have now are pretty aggressive searchers themselves. (I gave them a lot of chances, because one of the first times I asked them for halves, they said they only had 4 to sell me -- 3 Walkers and a Franklin. :))

    2. I seem to be getting better-than-average performance out of the sources I'm currently using. From the reports here, box-searching sounds pretty marginal, although I should probably recompute the costs -- searching is fun, but driving from bank to bank really isn't.

Of course, I could always just buy and sell them on eBay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...T9iYIg2Zz9c%2B3W4PhvF7FYrNrbs%3D#ht_500wt_983

Such a deal -- the seller got maybe $23 after fees for $30 worth of change (plus he got the fun of packing and shipping it), and the buyer got $30 worth of change for just $34.56! This is why I'm not selling my eBay stock just yet. :)

    Penny roll searching

Searched through $10 worth of Lincoln cents the other day because the bank i went to would not let me exchange $25 for a box of pennies :(

Found what I believe would grade as a mint state 1941-P

What are the odds of finding something like that :smile I was happy.

On a side note... another bank gave me $10 worth of 2010-P mint wrapped rolls. Each one had spinning marks on the outside coins, but I opened one roll and found many of those little spots on each coin. Are these worth hanging onto as unopened rolls?

Jarey2002, I believe those spinning marks you mentioned are from coin machines i. e. counters, sorters, changes makers, etc.
All meam Post Mint Damage. Had rings like that on a roll or more of New Mexico quarters back in 2009. it's a downer to say the least.
