Hi everyone, I've browsed this forum for a while, but never had a reason to post. Until now. My ex-girlfriend works at a bank, and she brings me home the oddities. (silver coins, foreign coins, silver certificates, etc.) The other day she handed me this dime (along with two silver eagle that someone turned in for a buck a piece!) I was just going to throw it in my silver bin, when I noticed something odd. Upon closer inspection, it sure looks like Mr. Roosevelt didn't comb his hair on this day. This is a raised spot on the coin. What is this? Thanks for looking, Kevo
Looks like a perfectly placed die crack to me. PMD could be raised but this looks like a good ole fashioned die crack imo.
Welcome! I agree - it looks like a die crack to me. The dies begin to get broken down from the tremendous pressure involved in minting coins and you get small imperfections like this. They are interesting because they are somewhat unique. It looks like there is a similar issue by the 4 in 1954. I'd call this a "cud" because rather than a crack, it appears more as a chip in the die at the edge.

There's a fine line between a crack and a cud. I guess this could be considered a cud although with this coin I think it could be left up to the person since it is unclear whether it touches the edge. The thing at the four is though. And Kevo: Could you get a better pic of the date please? Its barely in focus there because you were focusing on the crack. There's little premium with minor errors such as this, although the location might help out some. Die cracks are fairly common (however they are not often this big). Its a great find nonetheless. I have yet to find a major crack. Just a couple Lincolns with cracks on the corners of the memorial.

Its on problem. A dime is the hardest to get a pic of since its smallest. It takes a lot of practice to get good pics of coins. You can search and find plenty of threads here about just that. I'm still about as bad as it gets when it comes to taking pics.
Back in the day there were many different errors made so I hang onto all questionable coin errors for sale at a coin show. You can only get opinions on what ppl here see from a pic, it's up to you to decide if there's actually something more there than the pic shows. good luck
Die cracks usually result from a well used die. The area next to the 4 is probably due to worn die and/or being lightly struck. Also the rim is not well defined due to circulation. If the coin was not well struck, this area of the coin could blend together with circulation.
ya know, you all are missing the point here. his FORMER girl friend is doing this for him? Why did you get rid of her? she seems like a real keeper to me!
I get the best of both worlds. Coins from the former, better cooking from the current! Sincerely, they're both wonderful, I don't deserve either of them!
Treashunt has a point! Not many present or former girlfriends (or wives) will do that sort of thing for us. Our's can be a lonesome hobby when it comes to significant others. My girlfriend doesn't want to hear about coins unless it has to do with PM investments.
