Reason I´m asking is this Now the medals weighs about 150 grams and I know it´s silver. I can not find this big boy on the net so I was hoping as always someone here would push my sorry but to the right direction Siggi
Other than to say they were privately minted for the commemoration by the Franklin Mint, I know about as much as you . They were issued in great numbers, and in different languages. English, Chinese, Russian , French and Spanish . Totaling five different languages. They can be had for about $35.00 on the net.
Well with 150 grams of silver the price is around 120 USD. I have seen the smaller ones on ebay and on some sites but a big one like this I have yet to find.
It's clearly not the Franklin Mint! It is printed right there inside the presentation case, Monnaie de Paris, the French Mint. They make all sort of medals and commemorative pieces. Try searching the database on the Monnaie de Paris web site -- along the left column. Did the Franklin Mint sell them in the US? I don't know the Franklin Mint that well since much of what they sell is junky to me. Did perhaps the UN Postal Administration sell them too? or through some other UN division for selling commemorative pieces to the public? If I dig up any more resources online I will post them for you.
It also makes sense that it's a silver medal since 25th anniversaries are typically known as 'silver anniversaries' and 50th is the 'gold anniversary' :thumb:
I have four of the United Nations Peace medals (71, 72, 73, and 74) that I purchased for $11/each a couple of years ago at an action. I'm guessing that they're probably worth about $15-$20 each now considering that they're made of sterling silver (93% silver). I, too, have this medal. I got it from a coin dealer about 30 years ago. He told me it was silver; didn't say if it was sterling or something else. What disturbs me about it is I cannot find any representation of silver content on it anywhere. It's about 158 grams and mine is beat up a little. Does any reputable manufacturer create silver items and not declare its purity via a stamp on the item?
Well Siggi, I can tell you about his little brother in 1 ounce size. It celebrates the 25 th aniversary of the United Nations. It was stuck in sterling silver .925 fine. The statue outside the UN depicts "Beating your swords into plowshares."
