My collection size and storage. How much is too much?

I recently had to move my entire collection into my bedroom because I am helping out some relatives by letting them stay with me. So I lost my entire basement. So now I have to look at this every morning. This is about half my collection. Its bitter sweet, I guess. I feel exposed in a way. I estimate all albums as a whole to be about 75% full.

Anyway, I had mentioned on another thread awhile back that I broke up all mint sets and put them in albums. I still have duplicates of all mint sets though.

I am not trying to showoff or anything, I'm just curious how large of a collection an average collector amasses.

ps: the angel makes it bearable for my wife to look at.

I am looking at getting a gun safe for christmas.

 

I recently made a significant investment in a new safe, and learned something fairly valuable, to me at least.

A VERY large majority of safes are NOT secure by any stretch of the imagination. Oddly, YouTube proved to be one of the best resources for researching safes. Just search "breaking into ________ safe" or "cracking _____ safe" for whatever brand/model number you're considering, and prepare to be frightened.

You'll find numerous supposedly "high security" safes being busted open in less time than it would take YOU with the combination at hand. Indeed, some of the "lower end" models can be opened with a POTATO. (No, I'm not making that up). Even some of the better performers survived less than a minute under a direct assault.

This isn't meant to "scare you away" from safes by any means...just a suggestion that you do very thorough research. You have a significant investment in your coins, one that is almost certainly NOT covered by homeowner's or renter's insurance. As such, it is only sensible to make a significant, and wise, investment in protecting them.

I think that's a good idea. You have a lot of stuff out in the open and if you're feeling exposed looking at that everyday plus have a lot more people around the house, it's probably safer to put your mind at ease if it were all in a safe or SDB. Your wife is bound to think of putting up some curtain type contraption with cutesy prints on it soon anyway.

You can never have too many coins gbroke. By all means though get yourself a high quality safe, but be prepared to spend some money, they're not cheap.
Looks like a great collection, but I cringed when I saw the pic of it just sitting on the open shelves like that .... fire, theft etc. Just too much free advertising there.

 

Yeah drives me crazy too. It's not even the fear of strangers getting to it, but its more about my sons as they get older and start having friends over. Thats what scares me. On a side note, holy smokes safes are expensive!

Apple devices are useless on Flash web sites.

That is a very small factor in why Stevie won't support flash on the iphones and ipads.. But we can save this discussion for another time. ps. The coinnection software is developed completely in flex, which uses the flash player. So iPad guys will not be able to use it.

 

Not supporting Flash is a feature, not a bug...

In any case, quite the impressive collection there! Mine is much smaller, though I've still been looking into safes... I'm more worried about fire than theft, in general, but neither would be a good thing.
