Looks like it to me. Nice find. Did you find that in a proof set?

    Thanks.

Nope. The other day I bought a few proof coins in 2x2 to add to my collection. Didn't even notice this until yesterday.
    Anyone know what its worth?

WOW! Congrats....that is ONE! It also looks like a very nice one!

Get that coin into an Air-Tite ASAP. It's worth a lot of money and it's extremely rare. Based on the die runs at the mint, it's estimated than there are a maximum number of 3000 that exist. It is listed as #3 on the CLAM/WAM rarity scale.

Excellent Purchase. Most 1998-S PF69 DCAM Close "AM"'s will sell from $1,000 to $1,350.00. They are rare and hard to find.. I would suggest that you have the coin graded.

Any Idea what this coin would grade as? I'll admit I can't grade proof coins.

Also if I send it in who would be better? PCGS or NGC?

I won't make an attempt to grade a coin by photos. As far as certification it depends on which of the two grading services you are a member of and how much you want to spend to have the coin graded.
For resale value I would venture to say that a PCGS graded coin would draw more traffic, however I also like NGC . You could also consider ANACS as they do not require a membership. Hope this helps you and good luck.

A PCGS PR69dcam will sell for close to $1000. I don't know if NGC attributes the '98-S Close AM, but PCGS does. NGC doesn't include the coin in their Registry.

Forgot to add, it is definitely a Close AM. Great find....cha ching!!

Impossible to accurately grade a proof like that from pictures, but it looks like a 69 to me. Definately use PCGS, NGC missed the attribution on my coin even though it was specified on the form.

    Thanks guys.

Not skill. just got lucky this time. most of my pictures don't come out that good.

I can't grade proofs so you guys might be right but i don't really think it would make 69.
I moved it to an airtite last night but noticed it has a few little marks (hairlines?) in the field between Lincolns head and liberty. You can just make out about 3 of them with the naked eye but a few more show up there under magnification. I had noticed something there before but thought it was just the flip.
Anyway I was going to post pictures of that area but my pictures turned out useless.

Don't really have a clue how much that might drop the grade.

It doesn't matter, just send it in for grading to PCGS no matter what.

    Thanks.

Next question. I've never sent anything in for grading before. I'm assuming I'm better off taking it to a dealer who can send it in?
And would this count as the mint errors service? Would I also need Variety Attribution with it?

Yes, it would be cheaper to take it to a dealer who can submit it for you due to the Postage/Shipping/Insurance for both ways.

This is considered a Wrong Reverse Design and is classified as a Variety, (Type 1 reverse, Close AM). If you use PCGS the variety number should be FS-901.

Yes, be sure your dealer indicates this on his submission form too! Not sure what your dealer will charge you, but you might not get the $25 rate I get. I've done a LOT of business with my dealer so he gives me good deals. I expect them to charge you $50-60 which is still worthwhile and cheaper than doing it yourself.

    Thanks again.

I probably won't get a good deal. My dealer dosn't send coins in and according to pcgss dealer finder the closest one is out of my normal traveling area.
I'll have to check some things out first and ask around so I've taken the coin and put it in storage for now. I probably won't do anything with it until after the holidays.

You know $50 sounds a little high for a coin I paid $1 for. :D

Not when it's potentially worth 20x that $50. :thumb:

You can always look at it in another way. If you spend the nominal fee to have it graded and encapsulated and wish to turn it around for a profit, you would be able to buy at least 500 1998-S Proof coins to add to your collection and recoupe your $50.00.......LOL

Good Luck on your decision and smile all the way to the bank!!!!
