Think you might have missed the boat for the 2010 subscription Whitmtn but you've got the option for 2011 if you do sign up. Anywho, 12 noon Friday is pumkin time. Fire up the old PC about a half hour before kick off and hang in there....
2010 American Eagle Silver Dollar How quick do you think it will sell out? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks?
My gut feeling is "weeks". I'm sure they've (mint) been minting these pieces since they announced their being available this year, but I wouldn't expect them to mint these pieces beyond the end of December.
Field Report So I was in Washington DC today and swung by the U.S. Mint kiosk at Union Station. There were no Proof ASEs on display, and NO marketing materials about them present... Not a single mention that they were about to hit the market! Shocker... However, some marketing guru for the Mint had managed to shove a few of the new gift sleeves onto a shelf in the display case near the gold products. They had a 2010 Proof AGE 4-coin set on display and that looked sweet! I was eyeing the new Parks quarter rolls, particularly the Mt. Hood rolls, for something to buy from my visit, but I passed. And I am glad that I did too. I got three brand spanking new Hot Springs quarters in change from a cafe a few steps away in the food court. I almost did a double-take thinking someone had bought some quarters from the Mint kiosk when they ran out at the till. LOL.
While I agree there will be as much interest to warrant such concerns, excusing their ability to serve their customer base ahead of an announced sale date/time, is like not putting up a clearly roped-off queue line in front of a big box retailer on 'black friday'. It's asking for a door-buster and for someone to get hurt. I mean, come on, they could at least ramp up phone and broadband service for the day to deal with the flow. OR only accept pre-orders until all units are filled whereby successive orders go on a wait-list (back ordered). If concert tickets can be sold in advance and figure out the process of buying/selling during a rush, then the Mint can too. IF the Mint can't serve their customers online and via phone, then maybe they shouldn't offer such resources for ordering. This also could be another attempt to remind (advertise to) visitors to the site of the popularity of this item, as a subtle urging to buy other things on the site you want, today, and to come back for the event prepared tomorrow. Not likely, but I don't put anything past their schemes to move collectibles.
My two subscriptions both say "Item is no longer available" and "In stock and reserved" on each. I guess they still haven't cleared all the error messages from the status lines.
Mine too (in stock and reserved). Beats hovering over the computer tomorrow at 12 noon. I may give it a shot though, if only to see how cluttered the site is gonna be.
Well with you and others trying to log on for a look-see while sales kick off that will help to drive down site functionality.
I would love to know what percentage of the mintage has already been sold via subscriptions. Perhaps a quick sell-out? :smile TC
I think that has become the big question left to answer for many interested in these. This article from MintNewsBlog [11/18] 2010 Proof American Silver Eagle wonders as much:
How did all you people pre-order? I was going to subscribe but it said the first order through the subscription service would be the 2011 proof
Subscribed much earlier in the year. Others have had ongoing subscriptions running year after year. They recently changed the subscriptions for the next year. If you are trying to subscribe now, it's too late for 2010.
