This thread is in the spirit of calumsherwood’s thread titled “Friday’s Purchase”. This one is my Sunday purchase.

If you had told me that I was going to buy a Peace dollar at the Liberty coin club show, I would have not thought it possible. However, this coin just called out to me when I saw it. It is raw. It was amongst a hundred other raw US coins but its luster got my attention from afar. Upon closer inspection, the obverse looks very well struck and free of detracting marks. The price was right (about half way between gray sheet MS63 and MS64). IMO the only thing holding this coin back from a MS65 or better are the nicks in the reverse eagle’s feathers.

Some years ago, I bought a really nice 1925 P. At that time I read in Breen’s encyclopedia that the Philadelphia mint was known to do a really good job on both the 1925 & 1926. I seem to recall learning that in order for a TPG to give a MS65; the coin dated 1925 or 1926 has to be very special. Maybe some of our dollar experts can comment on that.

I will post some additional photos in an attempt to depict the awesome luster present on this coin. Wear your sunglasses because it might hurt your eyes :)

Thanks for letting me share & please post your Peace dollar photos.

I have always loved the peace dollar ... one of my favorites. Yours looks very nice -- good pickup!

Here is my 26. My guess is ms63, but I am just shooting in the dark.

The reverse is equally lustrous. This photo angle shows the nicks in the feathers very well.

IMO this new 1926 is nicer in hand than this 1928 which NGC graded MS64.

Is that doubling on the date, or just shadows?

    Good eye Poppa

You must be a VAM enthusiast. I only dabble in VAMs & I get excited when I stumble across a good one.

The reverse has sharp doubling on the olive branches and doubling at the rays under ONE. (I don’t keep all the VAMs in my head). I looked it up & thought it looked like a VAM 2 which I understand is a top 50 VAM in the Peace dollar series. However, the obverse does not have the die crack on the neck or thread-like impression on the headband. Rather, the obverse shows lots of luster & doubling at the date and Liberty’s neck. It is quite nice but it is apparently not the sought after VAM 2. I think it is VAM 6 listed at Vamworld. On the weekend, I plan show this to my friend the VAM collector. Do you know if VAM 6 receives much of a premium? If you think it is interesting, then I can take some close-up photos tonight.

Yes, that really captures the eye appeal better than the first shots imo. Great coin!
