. I recently purchased this 1910S Lincoln raw and I was wondering what the popular opinion would be on the grade. It is more red than the pictures show. Thanks in advance!
From what I can make out of your pix, AU-55. I am not familiar with your pictures and I have seen similar get graded MS.
There's hardly a hit on it, nice coin. Like Dick said, I don't know your pics, but I think AU is conservative. The surfaces are too free of hits for AU IMO. MS-64BN. possibly cleaned and retoned (gotta see in hand to tell for sure)
I have thought the same thing other than the grade, the reason for this is because I have reproduced the same effect placing it on the stove until it turns colors, dropping it in water then acetone and finally re-electroplating it with CU but it comes out better, a fund experiment for nasty common wheat pennies. DO NOT & I REPEAT DO NOT PUT ANY 1982 or GREATER pennies on the stove, mine can melt them as can yours due to Zinc's low melting point, a fun experement I do not condone, I burned a huge hole in my counter top that took hours of work to repair by me.
Honestly the coin looks to have been over-dipped to me. I would not be surprised in the least if it came back in a Genuine or Details holder if submitted. As to why I think that - it's just a look that the surfaces get and that coin has it.
Wow the opinions seem to run the gamut. I think I should post some new pictures because I don't think these represent the coin as it looks in hand. The coin is more red than brown but that doesn't show from the pictures. It has good luster and definately has not been recolored. If you look closely at the obverse you can see it has the beginnings of wood graining. I purchased it as AU from a reputable dealer but I think it is undergraded. (at least I was hoping so). Thank you to everyone for your opinions thus far.
Cash - please be aware that any dipped copper coin is going to be Red. That's why they are dipped in the first place, to make them Red. I eagerly look forward to any additional pics and if my opinion changes I will say so. But as I said, over-dipped copper has a very specific look and based on those pics your coin has it.
