I am hoping to enlarge my collection, and when I am old, pass it on to my one grandchild who is interested in coins with the instructions to enlarge it to the best of their ability. Then they do the same thing when they get to be my age. You might ask, suppose there isn't an avid coin collecter in all your grandchildren. No problem, there will always be one in every family.
Have fun - be a pusher... I've really enjoyed collecting, buying what I need to fill a hole, or picking up a good deal and reselling at a profit to pay for my habit..not. (Like buying a fishing boat to get the free fish.. The most fun though is always having some Indianheads, buffalo's, steel pennies or 2cent pc's to hand out to my wifes elementary school kids and teach a little history of what the coin has likely seen. Many have come back to me years later and told me about the coin collections they started and/or how they carried the coin for years. It's fun to pass it on... and hopefully the increased demand will drive up the value of my collection so I can really make some big money to pay for my free fish.
Learned my lesson A few years back I sort of forgot about coins when I got all tied up buying these highly collectible and valuable lighthouse sculptures. I ate, drank and slept these sculptures for about 2 years, buying every one I could get my hands on. I thought I was just gonna collect for a few short years and then reap the rewards and retire when I sold my collection. Well , like so many fad collectibles, the demand for these lighthouses slowed way down, dealers quit carrying them, ebay was flooded with them selling for 50%+ less than retail and now they aren't worth the trouble to store them. Anyway, while I was gone, coins (the ones I wanted of course) really took an upward swing and many that I put off buying then were now way out of reach for my budget, even if I could find them. I fell for the old "grass is greener" trick and it cost me dearly. That'll never happen again!!!
There are lots of ways to stop anything. Like aleady posted, loose a job, have a family to feed, coins just can't be a priority when food is required. One friend of mine has been out of work for almost a year. Many others I know have been out of work more than have been working. Coins become last thoughts. Another way is to try selling your coins and the dissapointment at the monitary loss may make you stop. If you live in an area where the weather stays kind of nice, get an old car and try rebuilding it. Gets your mind off coins. We have about 10 inches of snow on the ground so it's time to play with coins. Find out no family member wants them in case something happens to you so may as well just stop now and get rid of everything. I met a dealer the other day that said that's why he is now selling everything. He is in his 70's. Notice that unless you have lots of money you'll never complete many collections. Example try completing a Liberty Head Nickel albaum. I've been coin collecting for well over 50 years and even when I was out of work I still went to coin shows even just to pretend.
If it's that much of a problem, stop looking at coins and stay off of this forum because you won't find any support to quit collecting on this here as we're all coin addicts. Pick up a guitar!! :rollling:
Bid and win an expensive coin on ebay, in which it ships from China. That'll be enough to turn ya off for a while.
It was easy for me to take a break from buying more coins. I accidentally left my ebay open on my 'won/purchased' page and my wife saw it. "You spent over $1100 on friggin coins in the last 2 months???" - the wife There ya have it, I am now taking a break from buying coins!
Coin collecting is like having sex. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .um . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .er . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . uh . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . gee! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . the way i quit was by spending most of the non-emergency money i had already on coins. i will probably get as many nice coins as presents as i will be able to afford my own from now on.
Well it sure shows up on the side bar now. lol I find that I see these new threads that have died long ago all the time ? gary
Sometimes it does not hurt to open an old thread. I will keep collecting until I can't afford to. And I am not sure what that is.
Financially, many of us at least slowed the growth of our collection at one time or another. Me, being laid off last April was a really good excuse to temperarilly limit my collecting. But, to hang up coin collecting would just be insane! Why would anyone do that?
I've got a baby on the way so I am now on an 'allowance'. With that said I have slowed down drastically. I can now only afford the occasional Morgan (my coin of choice) if I forgo my caffeine and nicotine habit for a few days. I am now working on quitting tobacco so maybe I can afford more coins soon!
Good luck on kicking those nasty habits. I know a few of my friends got some help this past summer with a state wide smoking ban in all work places. If they aren't around others smoking, it made it a whole lot easier. Besides, I think Morgans are better for you lungs anyway!
