ANACS has this deal where they grade 10 coins for $10 each along with return shipping. When I wanted to send a bunch of my coins, many friends suggested not to use ANACS due to their super conservative grading. Has anyone here had a problem with using ANACS? What are your opinions about using ANACS? Thanks
Anyone buying a ANACS slab knows what they are getting. Overgrading seems to be a problem from the threads that I have been following, so I suggest staying with someone who will assign an honest and fair grade. ANACS also grades and assigns attributes to coins that the other companies won't, so why go anyplace else ? IMHO anacs
Most consider ANACS to be a step below PCGS and NGC. I would still put them above all the other TPGs except for those two though. If you shop around, you can usually score a good deal on coins in ANACS slabs, since they don't seem to carry the prestige that PCGS or NGC do. In my own experience, I think they tend to be a little more lenient with their grading standards than the other two. I have several coins slabbed by ANACS. And if I were considering sending some coins in for grading/slabbing, the deal you mention is a lot less expensive than anything offered by PCGS or NGC that I am aware of. Of course when it comes time to sell, you might not get the premium commanded by NGC or PCGS coins. But if they are fairly common dates, you'll probably come out ahead given the money you save on grading/slabbing fees.
There is a reason that ANACS offers deals like this, and a reason that ANACS slabbed coins sell for less than those slabbed by NGC or PCGS. Just remember the proverb - you get what you pay for !
Yes, there is a reason. Part of it is justified, part is not. It is widely believed that ANACS was very sloppy on grading a few years ago (notably the blue slabs). For many folks, Perception becomes Reality, and ANACS tends to sell slowly and/or at a discount. That said, many folks truly "buy the coin, not the slab". I had a yellow slab ANACS 1836 half eagle, AU55 and strong for the grade. I sold it for strong money to a very well-known dealer who is very knowledgeable on early US Gold. I had "bought the coin, not the slab"... and so did he. In that case a strong ANACS coin sold quickly for strong money. Perhaps that is an exception to the rule.

Now THAT is a truly good deal. I will look into it, if it proves true, I just may take them up on it. Got a handfull of Morgans that are between MS63 and 64, it might just pay off if some of them upgrade.
There are exceptions to almost any rule. And yes, I have always agreed that you can sometimes find real Gems in any slab. But you have to know your coins to be able to do that.
I recently read an article where a numismatist decided to test the three TPG's by sending coins in for regrading to all three. He stated that in his research, I honestly cannot remember how many coins he used, that he couldn't find any difference at all. I think the fact that dealers get such good deals with PCGS at one time they started pushing that service and increased it's marketability. Advertising, advertising, advertising. However, I did learn that PCGS does not attribute all varieties. Either through lack of knowledge or research. I do not think they recognize the 1992 D CAM for instance and many of the VAMs ?
I like ANACS. They are half a notch below NGC and PCGS, but also at least half a notch above any other grading service out there.
That all depends on what type of coins you are considering sending. If your coins are relatively inexpensive (say $50-$200) it could make sense but really depends on the coin series and grade. For more expensive coins, ANACS doesn't make a lot of sense, IMO.
