Im a rookie at this but Im getting my feet wet. ive been buying coins cheaply and thrifty. The most Ive spent on a coin so far is 2.00 for the 1862 French Centimes. How have I done so far?
No bad at all. It is a good start. Now I recommend getting some books - a red book, grading book, and maybe a couple of others. Lots to learn and enjoy about this hobby.
yeah, its really relaxing. Ive been barrowing books from the B'ham Lib. (Outdated) so im probably going to cough up the money for a price book. In Birmingham you can find books about guns and violence but nothing on coins.........Shame.
I paid a quarter for the V nickels! Got 'em in a bargain bin. The owner said they were not suppose to be in there, but he would sell them to me at the .25 price for his mistake. Thats why I love my coin shop. The guy will always give you the benefit of the doubt. He's selling atocha ( cant spell) coins with certif. for $200 Im saving up.........
Yeah, when people come in they always call him by his first name. He shakes their hand and always asks them how their doing. Listen to this- The shop is a coin/Jewelry store: So I was in there the other day and a woman came in frantic, he asked her whats the matter and she told him the ring that her grandfather gave her grandmother had broken (I dont know how) He said he could fix it. So she asked how much it will cost, and he said "Not a thing" She insisted that she pay something, and he said "Ok....a penny" Like you said mark good service brings 'em back. I dont spend more than $10 at a time there, but he treats me as if I were buying a $20,000 ring. His dad owned the shop and he passed to him. Its hard to find a coin shop with that service
Do you have a red book? That's the first book I would recommend. A 2009 or 2010 copy should be availble & cheap. Consider getting a whitman folder for the V-nickel collection. Only the rare 1912-S has a mintmark so the date run from 1883 to 1912 is only about 30 coins. With some searching, you should find most of them in VG without breaking the bank. The 1912-S and 1985 & 1986 are the tough ones.
Collecting coins is an addiction. I started like you and have a bunch of them now. I just can't stop. It is such a fun hobby and this site is a great place to learn.
It's hard to find any business at all that has the attitude of your copin dealer. You are quite fortunate indeed.
Neat collection. What are the themes that you collect by? Is there a method to your collection? If so, what? Just curious...Mike
I have gotten addicted to it. I love history so this fits right allong in there. And its not a money pit...(No punn intended) My dad collected baseball and basketball cards when he was a teen all the way up to the point when I was born, so he had some really great cards: Rookie Micheal Jordan, Rookie Shaq O'neil, Rookie Derek Jeter.. etc He recently tried to sell them to a card shop and they said that the economy is so bad they dont buy cards - just sell them.... He gave them to me and told me to hold on to them... Ive gotten him intrested in coins too. Im having to teach him what little I know.(Which isnt much) But me and him really get a kick out of this. Its a great hobby to get into. I wish I would I would have gotten into it earlier. Baseball cards, stamps, etc might be ok to collect, but there is not much to gain and there is so much to loose. With coins you can cheaply amass a decent collection. And also with cointalk, it makes it alot easier researching coins and getting oppinions. I cant thank everyone enough for all the questions I give yall.
