Pchrysler97, Congrats on your art bar purchases. The silver art bar that stands out IMO is the "Nobody's Perfect" bar that was minted in 1975. I think that is a GreatHouse Productions Mint bar with a type 3A reverse. Those GreatHouse productions art bars usually sell for a huge premium over spot on ebay. That is an excellent find IMO. It hard to tell from the last picture but it also looks like you found a sports theme bar that was minted by The Mint. It looks like a "Super Bowl XIX 1984" (TM-41EN) enameled version silver art bar that was minted in 1985. Those also usually sell for a large premium over spot on ebay. That is another excellent find IMO.
Recently I saw a Babe Ruth bar [like the one I have] for sale. Seller is asking $35. Don't know if he sold it. But $35 is just about double what I paid. Before this last jump in silver price I did sell two 1 oz. APMEX and a 1 oz. Russian seal for $21 each. It's tempting to cash out the rest now. But some reports say hang on because $30 per ounce silver prices are coming.
I bought the following silver art bar at a coin show today......... It is 1-oz "Mount St. Helens" silver art bar. It is not a '70's silver art bar but I wanted to post it on this thread. It was minted in 1982 by the Golden State Mint. I paid $30 for this bar (spot closed at $26.77 yesterday). The "G.S.M." on the left hand side of the reverse side of the art bar stands for Golden State Mint.
Congrats on your recent ebay purchases. In my opinion, The Coca-Cola-Meridian silver art bar (WWM-82) stands out in the bunch. That Coca-Cola-Meridian silver art bar was minted by the World Wide Mint. The mintage is 2000 according to the second edition of Thomas Mock's book called "Coca-Cola Bottler's 75th Anniversary Ingot and Round Guidebook 1975-1988". If this art bar was put on ebay by itself as a stand-alone auction, then I usually see winning bids of between $40 to $60. Excellent find. The USSC " Spruce Goose" silver art bar (USSC-106) is also a very good find in my opinion.
This is great!!! I have read alot of the posts in this thread and would like to chime in a tad. I started my silver collection because I had an extra $75.00 that was profit when I sold a gun last winter. I asked a few folks what I should invest the extra cash in and they said hey why not try silver. So I went to Ebay and found these art bars and they ended up costing about $1. to $4.00 less than spot. and I bout 4 1973 assorted grad, easter, and one or 2 others I think. And put them away. But the more I look @ the ebay prices the more it disgusts me. From your readings it looks like they should be worth a few bucks more than spot but the ones I bought seem to be still less. lol Did I buy the wrong ones? THANKS JON
you would be amazed what i bought today i should post some pics of the bars i bought today rainbow mint #1 peacemaker cancelled bar strickland mint 1 oz and 5 oz bar and 12 dr peeper bar set and a very unique 1500 grain .999 silver bar for 110th anniversary award maybe i can get some pics up later if u like
Usually art bars such as the ones that you mentioned will cost $1-$2 over spot if you buy them locally. The rarity values on art bars can vary widely. Most of the holiday theme silver art bars will not sell for much over spot on ebay. A lot of them might sell for between $3 to $5 over spot on ebay. On the other end of the spectrum, you will, for example, have certain rare World Wide Mint Coca-Cola art bars that will sell for $100's of dollars over spot silver. Factors such as demand, mintage numbers and brand name will affect how much they are worth on ebay. Holiday theme art bars are very common '70's silver art bars and they will have a low rarity value over spot silver. A lot of the Madison Mint silver art bars are also common '70's silver art bars and most of them will also have low rarity values over spot silver. Silver art bars that have themes such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Happy Birthday, and Happy Anniversary will also typically have low rarity values over spot. Silver art bars such as GreatHouse Production art bars, Certain Coca-Cola art bars, and Green Country Mint art bars to name a few will have high rarity values over spot because these art bars are very popular and they have low mintages (50 to 500). Certain "Cancelled" art bars will also have high rarity values over spot because of low mintage numbers.
That is IMO an excellent find because '70's silver art bars that are "cancelled" dies are very hard to find locally.
I have only been collecting the older bars and rounds for about a year now, but every week I search many shops and shows in different counties and have never seen a canceled bar. I have landed some rare bars, but never a canceled one.....that is a really good find.
Ahem! eh... well, don't be surprized if that pic you posted gets edited here. a lot less has been taken down. but thanks for sharing. :smile
Yeah those silver art bars are risky and like Krispy said, do not be too surprised if/when that is edited out. Those silver art bars are the Crown Mint Beauties series. The May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December art bars of the Crown Mint Beauties were minted in 1983. The January, February, March, and April art bars of this series were minted in 1984. The mintage for each art bar in that series is 5000 according to the 4th edition of Archie Kidd's guidebook called "An Indexed Guide Book of Silver Art Bars". Obtaining a cancelled version of any silver art bar always a good find IMO. Good job on getting the cancelled version of the 1973 Belford Mint Peacemaker silver art bar.
HA HA , I like those, Such a dirty old man I am. Yep thats what my 4 bars are madison mint I think. I paid about 15. to 17.50 on them I guess. I think silver was about $18.50 an ounce. So I figured I did OK. But I should not loose on them for what they are? They should be worth close to spot as long as they are silver? I guess you could melt them, if nobody bit on what the theme was?
I sold the following silver art bars + 5 oz's of generic silver to a local shop......... Hamilton Mint Clarence Darrow (see post # 128) Mount Everest Mint "Star of Wonder" (see post # 132) Madison Mint "Old Iron Sides" (see post # 125) I sold these and the other generic silver because I no longer wanted them and I will admit that these bars were impulse buys that I made earlier this year and since spot is at currently $26.00, I decided to go ahead and sell them today. I plan to use some of the proceeds to buy the silver art bars that are on my silver art bar wish list. I usually do not sell that often but I wanted to "clean up" my silver art bar collection by selling silver art bars that were impulse buys that I no longer wanted. My 1st main goal is find and buy some silver art bars that were minted by Great House Productions, Green Country Mint, and The Mint. My 2nd goal is to find more World Wide Mint Coca-Cola silver art bars.
Coke bars My favorite Coke bar. My others are nowhere nearly as ornate. Of the ones I don't have, I know Houston, Dallas, and IIRC Atlanta are very nice bars. I collect coins, not bars, but Dad collected Coke items, so I got the bars when he passed, then began adding to them. I am thinking about getting a 'bar Dansco' and filling it with Coke bars.
