How much does the toning help this coin?

If you have ever been into my shop you know that I (until very recently) haven't really cared about toning more then it meaning a coin is nice and original. I picked up a coin this last weekend that I feel is attractively toned. I also purchased it because it was priced fairly for a coin even without toning. My question is would this be a piece that is collectible to toning collectors? If so... what is a piece like this worth to toning collectors?

    Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, there would be little premium for a coin toned as such.

Here's how I would evaluate the toning premium on the buy side (i.e. if I were considering purchasing it):

Using PCGS price guide as an example, the retail price for this coin is listed in 63 for $235. The retail price for the coin in the next higher grade, 64, is $280. I would expect an appropriate price for the coin to be between the two (i.e. some small premium, but not to exceed the price of the next grade up) -- $250-ish sounds about right.

As for the coin and on the sell side.... The coin has a few negatives, IMO: (1) splotchy, (2) reverse rather than obverse toning, (3) a common toning pattern/coloration (i.e. none of the money greens or neons), and (4) the luster appears a bit flat (which perhaps explains the 63 grade, as the surfaces seem clean for a 63). Marketed correctly it can bring a bit of a premium (perhaps by taking complimentary photos), but I would not expect that you could sell it easily to a dealer for anything but greysheet. A specialist dealer may offer a bit more.

That said, I'm not aware of the relative toner rarity of this particular date, and that could be a factor which could sway the valuation -- perhaps someone more familiar with the series can comment in this regard.

All of the above IMO & respectfully submitted.

p.s. I like the coin, and find it attractive. Please don't misconstrue my frank assessment of the cruel reality of the coin game to be a hit on the coin or its owner. :)

Not at all. I appreciate the honest assessment of the coin. This is just one market I have yet to dip my toes in... and for what I paid even with your assessment... I did well.

It's a nice coin, but I think it isn't one that would command strong premiums, if at all . It's going to take an even more specialized or sophisticated toning market collector to have an appreciation for this coin .

That coin would easily sell for a premium because of the toning but I agree it's not going to sell for multiples of guide or anything crazy. I would say maybe a 20% to 30% of guide premium would be a fair guestimate.

While the toning is so so.
The coin is a CC. So I would say premium of 25-35%.
If I were selling I would ask for $280 and give a little wiggleroom for negotiations to make em feel all good inside.

PS I'm sure your going to make a killing, same with the walker. Markup on those both will be a nice vacation.

The mottled toning is not a huge plus, but it will still probably attract the attention of a toner fanatic. I trust Shane's estimation.

I also noticed that it has obverse and reverse die clashes. Can you see the letter transfer from the "n" of IGWT along her neckline? I'm not sure, but I think I see a slight "tick mark" from the tip of the "n".

It's also not a coin a dealer would allow to hang around in inventory waiting for a specialized collector to make an offer on . I'm sure LD bought it at a price where he could turn it over quickly and make a tidy profit selling at $250.00
