Is there much of a market for IKE dollars? Regular and circulated. One of my tellers just got $700 worth from an elderly couple needing money for meds. The teller mentioned it did not look like any silver....

    Thoughts?

I would pick them up. I think they are a very under appreciated series.

I wouldn't waste my money at face value.

I bought about a dozen or so at the shop yesterday at a buck each. Paid a lot more for the silver quarters the lady had. The Ikes went into the till to give out as change.

If you can get them at face value, you bet your backside I'd pick them up (considering I had the extra cash).
No harm in looking through them and spending the worn ones.

I've never seen one in circulation. I would honestly just complete the set and move on.

Definitely pick them up and go through them!!!!!!

"waste" of money??? come on... if you can get them for face value they will never be a waste of money as if you ever need the cash you just take them right back to the bank!!! it's a no brainer to get them all, have some fun looking through them, pulling out the best ones and then either keeping or taking the rest back to the bank.

  9. I would pick up the entire $700 lot at face value and search for MS65+ and varieties. TC

I sell them on a regular basis at a local flea market... three for five dollars. I usually sell about 10 lots each time, so I pick up as many as I can at the bank to keep the inventory intact. Ninety percent of the people who buy these have never seen an Ike before...

I would save a few to give out to youngsters for change, in hopes of maybe recruiting some new future coin collectors. I usually do it with Kennedy halves, since they are a little more available in my area.

There are several things to look out for in Ike dollars. There are a number of people here on CT interested in Ike collecting, check out the thread: Post an Ike. If you can get them at face and redeposit any you don't need later, definitely sort them for any 40% silver dates and look for the various known varieties, start here for an idea of what to look for: ikegroup.org

You can also ebay themin $100 lots and make a bit of cash, although admittedly not much. I always pick up whatever a bank has just to look for silver ones, varieties etc then spend the rest. I like the flea market idea.

For Face value ? What do you have to lose ? I would search them, pull anything good and either deposit or spend the rest (maybe all of them ?) But I buy coins by the box to search anyway. But I would jump on this, and if I was a bit short, still get as many as I could. I mean, you only invest the time it takes to look at them.

Interesting range of opinions. The funny thing about them is
ALL of them are right. Each collector's opinion is right for them.
I have never known a series of coins
draw out such diverse and passionate opinions as the Eisenhower Dollar does.
Some people have the perception that none of them are worth collecting
and have no value as a collector piece. Some would not even buy them at face value price.
Despite some Ike's going at auction for VERY HIGH prices. Actual money changing hands
    not just asking prices.
Not to mention that Eisenhower Dollars are the most popular Dollar coin as far as
    registry sets at PCGS.
I am not trying to convince anyone of anything, just facts
I hope that I can have at least another few years to get my hands on as many Ike's
as I can before they do take off in popularity, and the prices really get out there.

    Just My Humble Opinion

Who says IKE's aren't popular? [IMG]

Total IKE sets registered = 1457 sets

Total Morgan Dollar sets registered = 1390 sets

Total Presidential Dollar sets registered = 1283 sets

There are only 6 possible Eisenhower Sets in the Registry and 16 Morgan Dollar Sets which makes it all the more amazing considering the advantage that gives Morgan's number wise[IMG]

    So,,,,, IKE's are #1,,,,, Morgan's are #2 & Presidential Dollar's are #3 [IMG]

I've been picking up brown Ikes at or below melt on eBay. I figure it's hard to go wrong at that price.

    What?

What do you get from melting an Ike?

Is the copper worth more than the silver (per coin)?

You learn something new every day!

I never in a million years would have guessed that there are more PCGS Registry sets for Ike dollars than there are for Morgan dollars.

I suspect the cost involved in assembling a complete set has something to do with it...just a hunch.

Yikes! Don't tell him that. Now he'll want to search them before he rids himself of this terrible burden.
