are there many uk collectors on this site? its just that most of this talk about wheaties and d lincons goes right over my head.
I am The sound of halfcrowns, florins and shillings is sheer joy I'm a Brit in the US, so I have some US myself, but my main interest is overwhelmingly UK ... what are you collecting?
i try to get the oldest coins i can. to be honest im not a hugly serious collector and dont really collect 1 specific thing. the only complete thing i have is a 1937 uk denomination set
Calum Well, sounds like you have goals! Mine is to get as good a C20th set of ¼d - 2/6 as I can. I have all back to 1928, and some denoms further back. Going to take a while! I'll be toodling back to visit family in Liverpool later this month (hence my username!), and might even get a chance to toodle over to Ipswich Nov 21 for the Lockdale auction. Magman, How do you like it in the UK? I really do like it very much here in the US (being married to an American helps a lot, but the scenery is very pleasant).
I have lots of Brit coins. I would like to get a set of at least one from each monarch, maybe going back to William the Conqueror. My oldest right now is a long cross penny from Edward II.
aside from the increased cost of things, I like it. And the driving on the wrong side of the road is a bit weird...
I love the pennies and someday plan to get them all, but for now it's just whenever I see one cheap I pick it up. I'm talking like 1800-1960 pennies.
i dont really have goals to be honest, i like just finding the coins( which is hard enough where i live) i finding as much as i can about each one through research
I have a set of British Type (non-gold) back to 1860. A complete set of pennies 1860 to 1967, A set of one per Monarch back to 955 (missing four), and of course my English Conder tokens. (Approaching 900 different varieties, just added four more Skidmore Churches and Gates pieces and a Pidcocks farthing this past weekend.)
Wow - that sounds like a great collection! I'm thinking of getting some type sets for the C19th side of things (it'd be too expensive to date collect!). Do you do it by denomination or year (eg, a Bun Head & Old Head penny for Victoria, or rather a set of all coins representing 1860-1887, one for 1887-1892 (penny was still Bun Head during this time), and one for 1893-1901)? What are the 4 monarchs you're missing - are you including very short reigns such as Edward V and Lady Jane Grey?
For the type set it's one coin of each design, all denominations except gold. For the one per Monach it is just one coin any denomination issed during their reign. The FIVE I am missing are (miscounted) Edwig 955 - 959 Edward II (Edward the Martyr) 975 - 979 Edmund II (Edmund Ironside) 1016 Harold II 1035 - 1066 Edgar Ethling 1066 There seems to be some question over whether or not Edmund Ironside and Edgar Ethling issued coins. If they didn't then I'm down to three. It's a reasonable question since there were a lot of Kings in those years, three in 1016, and four in 1066.
I don't believe so, just wanted to see if she was on the list though! 9 days is a pretty short time to organise stuff; I don't think Edward V did either ... maybe Condor can confirm?
