Any thoughts on Seated Dimes? Does anyone think that this series will gain more popularity in the future?
I don't think it will become any more or less popular than it is now, really... but that's really hard to predict. Have a nice 1890 seated dime myself, that toned in just the right way to give it a nice antique cameo look. One of my favorite coins.
I think that the series is too vast to gain a large populous of collectors. I love the series and find it a challenge to find the dates/MM's I need for my collection, even some of the higher mintages are tough to find. So my final decision is that people will tend to collect them for their Type Coins instead of an entire run of the series.
The series has never been popular to collect as a "series". Others have noticed that it is usually the "type" coins that folks want. AS such, go for the top grade: No Stars/ No Drape, Arrows, I notice that my 1837 "No Stars" @ MS-63 has risen dramatically the last few years as have the "No Drape" in the same grade. Good luck
As a series, I think it is highly doubtful. There are simply too many of them to collect as a series, they are too hard to find nice, and they are too small. If I were considering this series, I would look into either the very rare in a grade I could afford or the very common in the highest grade I could afford....Mike
In the last year I have purchased two circulated examples, one from 1850 (150 years older than Thalia Elizabeth) and one from 1876, because I thought it would be cool to have a coin from our nation's centennial year. As a bonus, the 1876 is a CC, so I finally have an example coin from the Carson City mint which was something I've wanted since I was a young numismatist. I'll edit in some photos later.
I really like the seated coins, espesially in vf or better, but I think the only way they will go up much is if some other popular series get to expensive, kind of like what the Lincolns are doing right now. But once again my crystal ball ball is cracked. I wish I knew the answer.
