I thought we were talking about the cost of the coin, not the other incidentals. Are we supposed to guess if they used Priority, Express, Overnight, Tracking & Signature Confirmation or if they just used an el-cheapo mailer. Why don't you add the cost of gas, tires and oil to and from the post office, too? Chris
Iv'e never seen a buff with color like that before, I'm thinking at teletrade it would carry a hefty premium so $210.
IMO, you started down the right line of logic with your last post. The (a) series, (b) grade, and (c) look of the coin are most important factors, and you need to evaluate all three. Certain series of coins fetch large premiums, yet others do not -- for example, the Morgan dollars are a very popular series for toner enthusiasts, and this tends to drive premiums (particularly in higher grades) up. Yet, on a more thinly traded coin (like the one GDJMSP posted), there was little premium. Here are some series that fetch large premiums: Morgans Classic Commemoratives Franklins Here are some that don't: Circulated coins Most coins in grades MS60-MS 64 and PF-60 to PF-64 that aren't in the list above But really, you have to follow the market for a while to get a feel for which series/coins will fetch a large premium, and which won't. And remember, as with most coins it's primarily DEMAND that drives price. All IMO, of course.
It's been almost 12 hours since he was asked for the grade, and since this is your "game", Paul, I suggest that you dump the Buff and pick someone else to post a toner. Chris
Neither you (#240) nor I (#242) specifically asked for the grade, so I used Paul's request (#246) as an "official" time. Chris
There are a lot of 13-D Type 1's with less than full strikes so I think Doug's coin grades a little higher than most are giving credit. The soft date might hold it back to a 65 (though I think there's a shot NGC gave it a 66). So I will say the coin without toning was worth $250 in 2003 and the coin went for $410. By the way, I like the perimeter toning on this coin quite a bit. Let me add I wasn't actively collecting in 2003 so I am making this guess without knowing what kind of premium toning was bringing at the time. As Doug and Lehigh, among others, have discussed here, toning has not always brought a premium or been in vogue.
The grade is MS64. Had I known anyone was requesting that I would have gladly provided it. You guys know I'm not on at night, kinda hard to answer questions until you get the question.
Sorry. I will be a little more direct next time. I could not find a price list for 2003, but they were selling for just about $100 on Heritage in 2003. My guess is $600.
IMO Franklins fetch an extremely small premium compared to Walkers,Commemoratives, Morgans, Peace Dollars and Mercs. Such a small premium that one of these days Im going to mess around and win a nice Franky. Almost pulled the trigger on this one but figured since it was in the four prong holder my chances of sending it in for a star were slim. http://cgi.ebay.com/1958-d-NGC-MS66..._Individual&hash=item5640575ca5#ht_6085wt_962
I guess 385 for the Dougs Buffalo. Toning is elegant which is not my cup of tea, but I know alot of people desire that type!
I'll give it a couple of hours for others to guess now that I have provided the grade and then announce the price paid so the thread can continue.
