I won three lots at the Coinfest auction this weekend. Two of which are Barber Dimes one of which I intend to give to my cosin's son who I got interested in collecting this Summer while I was at the ANA in Boston. I took him with me to PNG day - and to two auction lot viewing rooms - plus to many dealers. He spent a day going thru my submissions for grading - and seems very genuinely interested. He even spent his hard earned cash on a couple of certified Barber Dimes - and some IHC's. As he was born in 1998 - his Dad, who is my 1st cousin - asked that I pick up a couple of 1898 coins for him [ 100th anniversary birthyear coins. ]. While at the Boston show - I picked up at auction two 1898 dated Dimes... the Phila in PCGS 55 and the San Fran in PCGS 50. This weekend, I completed the Dimes with a nice New Orleans Dime in PCGS 45. I think this YN will have a nice Christmas morning... I also got him an Eagle Certified Barber Dime set of albums. Anyhow... here are the three Dimes the boy will be getting... The 1898-O XF 45 I keep getting the reverse planted within the text of this Post - so - I'll use Photobucket for the other images. The Reverse of the 1898-O XF 45: Here's the 1898-P in PCGS 55: Lastly... the San Francisco... PCGS 50
some fantastic looking coins here ... i think nice looking high grade barbers are a hard find ... i rarely see them on ebay
elbesar: Nice coins, and a great start for your nephew. Winged Lib: ebay is not the place for nice Barbers, but.. then again, lately, now where is is a good place to find them. It used to be that I had my pick, limited only by my wallet. Lately, it seems that money doesn't matter... You just can't find them Any decent sized show usually had a G-4 or at least an AG 1896 S quarter, now? It is unusual to see one.
My bid held at a Teletrade auction this evening - and I was able to pick up a fantasticlly toned Barber Quarter: 1895-P PCGS MS 63:
thats a great looking pieces elbesaar. treashunt i feel the same sort of way. barbers are sort of like seated liberty dollars. when you see em most of them werent even worth asking to look at in the first place. when i saw that completely original ms 1916 quarter at the dealer i get most of my supplies from a "i had to buy it" feeling came over me.
I tell ya what's amazing... lately, I've seen some very high grade Barber halves with very conspicuous scratches. I'm talkin' about crazy numbers - MS68, PR68 - with very obvious scratches visible out of the corner of your eye without a glass. Scandalous. Yes, we go through cycles where nice business strike Barbers are tough to find, especially halves.
I hear you - loud and clear - but I've become very careful about inspecting any holdered coin based solely on images. The camera seems to pick up alot of hairline scratches and unless you've got the coin in hand - its very hard to grade correctly. [ espec. MS coins ]
Is that the "melt value" pile? I also like how some of you have cropped the coins together in the photos. Moneyeagle told me about photo scape that does that and I have yet to do it. Just played around so far. I am not much of a Barber collector but I sure love some of the pics.
Thanks - both coins are at PCGS for regrade and Pedigree Designation. I'm thinking the 08-O might get a point bump or a Plus !!
Thanks , your's are pretty nice too , that 1893 AU half doesn't look AU , looks better than some 65s I've seen , must be a little cabinet rub . rzage
Thanks - it has rub on the cheek - the fields are free of any rub or marks. Its at PCGS now for cross over and Pedigree designation - plus Variety Designation. [ TDR ]
