Thanks Guys. I just did not know if it could have been some kind of error where they struck the wrong sheet or something. Stuff Happens. But now I know to give it to a tricker treaters come Sunday. LOL

    Ok...taking more than a split second's glance, I was wrong..not a farthing, a penny. Still, rather nifty find I thought. :)

Figured I'd share a pic...pretty lousy shape, probably grades no better than an F12, or even lower.

I was really surprised to see it on the sort tray ! I even called my wife in to see it. It's no better than "Good" and may even be "Poor" as the "Liberty" is completely worn away and the feather details are gone. It has a very clear date though. I am going back to that branch today and buying all the cents I can from them. I cannot remember the last time I picked up an Indian in a roll, but it's been at least 20 years I think, maybe a lot longer.

Definitely a Penny. I have a 1911 (first year minted) around here somewhere. That would be a great find I think. Of course I don't believe we would see one in a roll here in the US ?

I found this one in a roll of US Halves actually. That's what made it so odd.

This kind of thing is what I so adore about this hobby.

That's a BRITISH PENNY that, 98 YEARS after being made, winds up in a roll of US Half Dollars???? Heck...the lousy condition is part of its story, if you ask me.

Imagine the transactions that coin has been a part of. How many hands has it passed through? What sort of people? Could it have been given to a begger to buy a drink? Could it have been given to a child for some candy? Could it have been left in a famous actress's change jar for years?

And what transaction(s) brought it across an entire ocean? Whose pocket did it ride in? I mean...think about this. It's at least POSSIBLE it got here in the pocket of a Titanic survivor.

And how on EARTH did it wind up in a roll of half dollars? Sure, it's the same diameter, but why'd it get stuck with them in the first place? And when? And why hasn't ANYONE noticed it before now??

Ya know...TPG slabbed high-end coins are nice to be sure, and certain coins are gorgeous in high grades without a doubt...heck, I have some, and I like them.

    BUT

Coins like this are why I do this. It's nearly a certainty none of us will ever know the answers to the questions above. That doesn't make the story any less interesting though.

I hear you loud and clear. Imagine finding that coin here ? How great is that ?

My personal favorite is a 1868 British Silver Shilling that was holed for a necklace. Very well machined to accept what could be a ribbon. Then it was crudely scratched with JMW and BVW with what may have been a pen knife. A gift worn by a girl given to a lover or husband (hence the same last ititial). Where did he go ? War, the States ? What stories are held here ? Every time I look at that beat up, damaged piece of Silver, my imagination runs wild. I would love to know it's story.

Yes, a Morgan that rode in a saddle bag, slid across a dusty barroom counter, bought a bag of beans or seed has history. The coins held by the wealthy, straight from the mint to behind a glass, didn't "do" much. But those who fed families, etc conjure a history. IMHO

Had to run to the bank to deposit some allowance savings for the son, grabbed $20 of nickels while there, mix of BWR and CWR.

    Filled 3 holes:

    1946 D
    1952 D
    1954

2 mercs is a really good box! Hammer them for a couple weeks... if you got 5 out of your first box, I'll bet they're relatively unsearched in your area.

My son wanted to start his own collection of nickels, I picked up a box. We completed 2005 back to 1963, the best find was a 1939S.

Let me know what you need. I have a jar full of pre 1964 Nickles circulated and could send a couple to help out.

Guys ! My wife took me back this morning to the little branch bank that had the CWRs I got with the 1919 Wheat and 1905 Indian Head Cents. The clerk sold me 98 rolls of customer wrapped that she picked for me. I had rinsed the 1919 with acetone and put it in a flip and gave it to her. My wife said that was a "Cheesy" move, but I don't think so. I told her it wasn't valuable or rare, but old and wanted her to have it.

Hopefully, she will hold on to some good stuff in the future ? I hope it wasn't "cheesy" to give her the cent though.

Returning my halves to the bank I found a 1964 dime in the coin counting machine :) . I picked up another box of halves and found one silver, but it was a XF nicely toned 1961 D Frankie. :D

I got another box and I'll open it tomorrow.
